Lakes & Ponds
A study about this ecosystem
The ecosystem's characteristics
A lake is a large body of water that's surrounded by land. They can range in size from large to small. A pond is a body of water that's shallow enough to support rooted plants. The difference between a lake and an ocean is that lakes have freshwater and oceans have saltwater.
The largest and the deepest lake
Lake Baikal is the deepest lake on earth. It is in Central Asia and contains 20% of the earth's freshwater. The Caspian Sea is the largest lake on earth. It is located in Asia and Europe. It contains saltwater instead of freshwater. It is also considered a lake because it is surrounded by land.
