E-cigarettes and Vaping: Information and Resources for Youth
E-cigarette use poses a significant – and avoidable – health risk to young people in the United States. Besides increasing the possibility of addiction and long-term harm to brain development and respiratory health, e-cigarette use is associated with the use of other tobacco products that can do even more damage to the body. Even breathing e-cigarette aerosol that someone else has exhaled poses potential health risks.
Vaping may seem like it’s harmless, but the truth is that vape e-liquid can contain nicotine, lead and other harmful chemicals. Escape the vape.

6-8 Industrial Technology
This week the student have started their woodworking and bridge building units. These units are very unique and fun for the students.
The 6th grade have started doing the safety work and tool demonstrations for basic hand tools used in wood working. The students will then take a safety test over the tools and their use. The students when finished covering the tools will be required to build a basic book shelf. The book shelf sounds very simple but is very complicated, the students are required to do measuring and cut several pieces of wood along with 2 dados.
The 7th grade students are also starting their woodworking unit as well. The students in 7th grade cover a wide variety of power tools. The students learn about the bandsaw, planer, drill press among others. They learn how to set up and safely operate the machines to create their projects. The 7th grade students get to choose from a very nice selection of projects that include media rack, guitar pick box, bandsaw boxes, bird house, tool tote, baseball/softball rack and cribbage board as well as a few others. The project provide a challenge to the students and in the end provide them with a very unique project that usually turn out very nice.
8th grade student have started their engineering/bridge building unit. The students work in partner groups to design a truss style bridge. Once they have gone though the designing of the bridge the student then build a small model of the bridge and then do a destructive test on the models to see how much weight they can hold. The goal is to hold at least 20 pounds, but many bridges exceed the 20 lb mark and some have even surpassed 100 lbs. This is a great team building activity and teaches the students problem solving skills along with how industry designs and tests products

End of the Month Meals
The End of the Month Meal program or E.O.M.M. was started in 2002 and is a not-for-profit organization and can only continue as long as generous people are willing to donate their money, time, can food items, or grocery gift cards. Any of these donations may be dropped off at New Covenant Church at 1510 West Madison Knoxville, Iowa. If you send a check please make it out to New Covenant Church and put “E.O.M.M. program” in the memo section.
We send out our deliveries from New Covenant Church 1510 West Madison. If people would like to have their meals delivered to them please call the church office at 641-842-3176 preferably the week before we start serving meals so that we can have an idea of how much food we need to prepare. The only information we need to have is your name, address, a phone number where we can reach you, and the number of meals you would like to have.
If you prefer to dine out you are more than welcome to go to the Jenkins Center on Main Street. We provide the casserole and vegetable or salad, whichever is on the meal plan and the people from Living Word Fellowship provides the dessert, coffee, and excellent service. No questions asked.
Our meals typically consist of a casserole for the entrée, a dinner roll, a hot vegetable, or a cold “salad” (these are flip-flopped each meal) , and a dessert. I also like to have a sandwich meal at least twice during the season. This would consist of a Manwich burger, scalloped corn, cole slaw, and a dessert. Our meals are “comfort food” and are good sized portions because nobody should go hungry.
These are the dates for the 2019-2020 season:
- December: 16th-20th
- January: 20th-24th
- February: 17th-21st
- March: 23rd-27th
If anyone has questions or would like to have someone talk about our program please E-mail shiloh1971@hotmail.com.
