English Learner Newsletter
September/October 2021
Classroom Without Walls
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, our English Learners' program was going to be limited to virtual learning only. This was to help prevent the spread of the virus and to make sure all our keiki were safe and well. We also knew that virtual learning distances us and prevents us from seeing and talking to one another in a real and personal way. Thus, we imagined meeting in an outdoor setting where our students who have limited or no English can come in small groups to learn English with their specialized teachers. The outdoor classroom began on September 7.
Each group comes twice a week for half hour sessions. The EL teachers meet them outside close to where their classrooms are. The children are very excited about this and we are pleased to see their happy faces.

Classroom Without Walls
Ms. Song and Mrs. Dumas travel around campus with their gray wagons to meet their students outdoors. It's a better alternative than virtual learning because we can see our students face to face by homerooms so we are not mixing cohorts. The chairs and tables and the materials used are sanitized after each use. The students are much happier and so are we. We're thankful we can see our students.
What great students! Thanks to Donors Choose and the generous donors who helped to purchase our surf tables, our dream has become a reality. | What hardworking students! We are so happy to be learning outside where the weather is mostly good and we can concentrate on our work. | What serious students! We're so thankful for the tables we can write comfortably even in the outdoors. |
