Principal's Note
I thought I'd share what we're up to as a team to give you an idea of the progress we're making in building a great UTC experience for our students. I'm writing this on a Friday afternoon and today we have...
- Discussed our Marketing Campaign for 2017 applications
- Had a meeting with an Engineering undergraduate who works with one of our sponsors about volunteering to support our students
- Re-drafted our Uniform guidelines for next year ... we're nearly there!
- Had a conference Call with the DfE about our Budget for the next SIX years!
- Visited University Centre Peterborough Computing Science and Engineering Final Year Project event and had a great discussion about working together in the future
- Networked with an Architecture partnership based in Cambridgeshire about the ways we can work together next year
- Published our Year 10 Half-Term Photo competition #myUTChoodieholiday
- Exchanged emails with staff eager to join our teaching and mentoring team next year
- Eventually managed to get our Solar Panels registered with EDF - bureaucracy gone mad!
- Hosted a Training event here at the UTC for one of our sponsors
- Informed the DfE about new applications
- Finalised our support for a Children's University event in June
And it's not even 4pm yet!
Steve Warburton
5 degree qualifications & over 48 years of teaching experience...
We here at the UTC are extremely delighted to be able to tell you that the above is the combined expertise of our newly appointed Senior Leadership Team!
Before the Easter Break the hunt began to grow our team and we are excited to welcome three exceptional individuals to the UTC family.
We congratulate and send a warm welcome to David, Laura and Sarah.
Read below to find out more about the newest members of our team and of course what we have been up to this past month.
David Bisley: Vice-Principal
Joining GPUTC in September as Vice Principal, David was educated and raised in Peterborough, but has spent his teaching career in the Yorkshire area.
He has eight years’ experience as a senior leader, with four as a Vice Principal in large secondary schools in Barnsley and Leeds. David has experience leading teaching and learning, behaviour, and curriculum design so comes with a wealth of experience in education as a whole. He is a qualified PE and Maths teacher, and will be supporting both subjects at GPUTC.
Outside of work he is a keen sportsman and enjoys travelling and seeing new places.
David said ‘I’m absolutely thrilled to be coming back to Peterborough to provide support and guidance to the students of GPUTC, I cannot wait to meet the talented learners I have heard so much about’.
Laura Collings: Director of Learning
After completing her Physics degree specialising in the field of optoelectronics Laura embarked on a three year voluntary teaching placement. Teaching Maths and Science in a remote school in Ghana, Laura also developed community health projects to curtail the spread of HIV/AIDS in Western Africa. Laura later studied Ghana’s Science Resource Centre model for her Master’s degree and continues to promote the engagement of girls in education particularly in STEM subjects.
As an ardent supporter of the University Technical College system, Laura has been closely linked with establishing new UTCs and delivering successful programmes of study from a senior leadership perspective.
Eager to forge links between the educational, industrial and commercial sectors connecting the classroom to real world applications, Laura has a track record of establishing exciting educational projects possessing a real wow factor.
Sarah Hutt - Student Support Director
Sarah has been a senior leader in education since the year 2000, most recently as a Head teacher for Focus Trust in Stoke Poges and prior to this working as the Vice Principal at Lutterworth College.
Sarah’s teaching specialism and passion is in the subject area of Product Design and she has led two departments to outstanding and worked as an educational consultant raising standards in other schools.
Before working in education Sarah sailed boats for a living in the West Indies. She currently lives on a Dutch barge moored on the River Nene and believes that an outstanding educational experience is the greatest gift we can give young people.
News & Events
Visitor from 'Down Under'!
We had a very special visitor this morning all the way from Melbourne! David was here from Victoria Polytechnic finding out about the UK's technical education - so of course he had to come and see us!
Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce Event
The Chamber of Commerce were at the UTC this month hosting an event at our state-of-the-art facilities. Here you can see our Principal; Steve in action as he addresses the group.
First applicant of 2018!
Applications for September 2017 are rolling in; however, this month we received our first applicant for 2018!
Its such great news to see that we are continuing to be the education of choice for Peterborough's younger generation.
GPUTC Movie Night
Earlier this month we held our first student social - a movie night for our Year 10s!
The evening consisted of a selection of icebreaker games giving our students the chance to get to know each other better and ended with lots of scrummy snacks and a showing of our Principal's second- favourite movie; The Martian! Apparently The Shawshank Redemption is his all-time No.1!
Such a fun night - thank you to all those who came!
Engineers Feature as one of Britain's Most in Demand Jobs!
Interestingly an engineers salary averages over £35,000 a year, and what's even better for our 2016 intake of students is that this career field proves to be one of Britain's most in-demand jobs at present!
A bit of no brainer for those interested in the field...
So if you want to learn some great transferable skills, travel the world and get to make a difference then start your engineering journey at the Greater Peterborough UTC this September!
Children's University
Do you have a child aged between 5 - 14 years old who has an interest in Engineering?
In partnership with the Children's University and the University Centre Peterborough we are putting on an event on Saturday 11th June for budding young engineers.
The Children’s University provides young people aged 5 - 14 with the opportunity to take part in exciting and creative learning activities outside of the normal school day so they can dip their toe into the technical field.
Every child taking part in the Children's University Event is issued with their own Passport to Learning. which allows them to record all the Learning Activities & Learning Destinations that they take part in. The entries will be evidence of the hours of learning completed and will lead to the presentation of CU Certificates at a CU Graduation Ceremony.
