From the desk of our Proud Principal

Dear Wonderful Bunker Hill Families,

I find it hard to believe that we are already half way through the 2016-2017 school year. Winter Break is right around the corner and will be here too fast. This break can be filled with long times in the car traveling from one house or event to another. The break can also be filled with long times of being at home. Although the break seems short compared to the long 7 week summer vacation, students can still very quickly regress in academic learning once out of their daily routine.

When there is appropriate time, I would recommend having your child practice math skills by logging onto Everyday Math online (https://www.everydaymathonline.com/student_login.html) and play math games, creating a math worksheet of problems and having someone in the house solve the problems, help cook -have your child measure the ingredients/doubling or cutting recipes as needed, board games (like Yahtzee, Go Fish, Old Maid, Cribbage, etc.) with them, serve the pizza and talk fractions as they give out pieces of pizza, practice math facts, and there are so many other ways to easily practice math skills over break. There are lots of websites with ideas. Here is one: https://nzmaths.co.nz/maths-our-house.

There are also lots of ways to easily practice reading over break. Have your student practice reading skills by logging onto Reading Wonder online (http://connected.mcgraw-hill.com/connected/login.do), read a book(s) silently or out loud to family member(s), write/read/perform poems, write a play and perform the play to family, write and give letters to family members that you will be seeing, draw art work to accompany the book just read, reading the boxes at the store, creating their own advertisements to sell a product, reading recipes, journaling, sight word practice, and there are so many other ways to easily practice reading skills over break. There are lots of websites with ideas, here is one: http://www.readingrockets.org/article/25-activities-reading-and-writing-fun.

Have a wonderful break! And I will see you in 2017 J

FTCSC Students are Prepared for Life’s Possibilities!

Mrs. Pickett's Counselor Corner

With the first semester of school coming to an end and the excitement of the holidays in full force, we all have A LOT on our minds! With so much on our plates, it is easy to forget the importance of giving back during this time of year. However, I have been able to witness Bunker Hill’s giving heart over these past few weeks. Students and families from The Hill have donated clothing, food, household items, money and lots of time. It puts a smile on my face to be a part of such a generous and caring school! Thank you and Happy Holidays to all!

Front Office Information

Please review a few important front office policies.

  • Morning student drop off must be done in the car rider line. Drop off opens at 8:35 am in the car rider line.
  • Students arriving after 8:50 am must be signed in at the front office.
  • If there is a change in transportation for students at the end of the day, we must be notified by a Parent/Guardian before 3:00pm. Teachers need time to make arrangements.
  • Attendance- Please review the Franklin Township policies and procedures for absences on p. 2-3 in the student handbook. We appreciate your cooperation.
  • All visitors must have a photo ID to enter the building.

Car Rider Reminder

Car Rider Participants:

Safety is our main focus in our car rider line. Please remember to have your child exit/enter the driver's side of your vehicle during drop off/pick up. If you have to use the passenger's side, a staff member must accompany your child to the sidewalk. A student cannot exit the passenger side of a vehicle without staff assistance.

We appreciate your patience when dropping off and picking up your child. This ensures the safety of all our students and staff.

Please share this safety information with anyone that may pick up or drop off your student.

Don't forget to check our LOST and FOUND for any lost items. It is located at the top of the stairs on the way to the cafeteria. Any items left at the end of the school year will be donated.

Each month we will send out a newsletter with important information, dates, and reminders. This newsletter will be sent electronically to the email we have on file for each student. If you requested a paper copy, the newsletter will come home with your student. The newsletter will also be available on our website http://www.ftcsc.k12.in.us/bunker-hill or our Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bunker-Hill-Elementary-School/172442352820782

Remind is another great way to stay connected to Bunker Hill. You just text the number 81010 and enter message @bhbulldogs and press send. We will send out messages/reminders and you will simply receive then as a text message. We have no access to cell phone numbers nor does anyone else in this group. You can not reply to the message as no one will receive them.

Friendly Reminders

  • We do our best to keep classroom disruptions to a minimum. If your child forgets an item and you bring it in, please do not be offended if the front office asks for you to leave the item with them so it can be delivered at an appropriate time.
  • If there is a change in transportation for students at the end of the day, we must be notified by a Parent/Guardian before 3:00pm.
  • If electronics (cell phones, ipods, gaming systems) are brought into school and removed from backpacks, they will be confiscated by the teacher. A parent/guardian will be asked to pick up the electronic at the front desk.
  • When having lunch with your student in the cafeteria please remember to only have your child sit with you at the family table. We like to keep the table open for other families. Please No Fast Food!
  • When visiting your child for lunch, please go directly to the cafeteria and exit the building when lunch is finished. We are no longer allowing parents to go to recess with the class. We appreciate your cooperation in helping limit our classroom distractions.

Road Closure

We have been informed that a section of Franklin Road will be closed beginning Tuesday, December 20th between Southport and Indian Creek roads. This will allow for the new Kroger store to tap into the water main located in that area. Please plan accordingly as you travel throughout the township.

Clinic Reminders

  • 5th grade parents: As your child receives their immunizations necessary for middle school, please send in their updated record to Mrs. Knox.
  • The mobile dentist will be here January 9. If you have sent in your paperwork, you will be contacted by the mobile dentist with more information.
  • If your child is vomiting, experiencing diarrhea, or has a fever they must be free of these symptoms for 24 hours before returning to school.
  • All medications, including cough drops, must be brought in and picked up by a parent or guardian to school. Please do not send medications to school with your student.
  • Franklin Township Community School Corporation Health Services now has a Facebook page. Make sure to Like their page here.

Physical Education News

Please mark your calendars! Our annual JUMP ROPE FOR HEART event is Friday, February 3rd. Students will jump rope to make their hearts healthy. If desired, they can collect donations to benefit the American Heart Association AND win some cool prizes. Look for detailed information to come home the week of January 2nd.

Parents, please encourage your children to be physically active for 60 minutes every day, as well as limiting “screen time” to 2 hours or less daily. Parents are the most important role models for their children’s health and fitness!

You are invited to Breakfast and Canvas, an event for both students and their parents/guardians. Come and enjoy some Chick-fil-a breakfast and some creative time with your child as we paint the example to the right. We will begin at 7:30 A.M in the cafeteria. Please park and come in at the front office then walk down to the cafeteria. The cost of this event is $12/per family. This will pay for ONE canvas for your family to paint together, painting supplies and breakfast. If you have two or more children who want to paint on their own canvas you will need to pay another $12. Please RSVP by filling out the below form by November 22nd.

On the day of this event we will also be accepting financial donations for The Haiti Fund: Ekipe. This ministry works to educate leaders among the young people in Haiti. Miss Wuest has worked directly with this ministry and knows that 100% of the money you donate will go directly to the people in Haiti.
