Resumen de Destrezas de Febrero y Marzo, Contenido, Temas
Reading / Lectura
Students will read to become critical thinkers of the pieces that they are reading in both fiction and non-fiction. We will revisit topics covered in the fiction and non-fiction units, with a focus on reading to analyze text and search for information within the text.
Writing / Escritura
Students are learning to respond to text-dependent questions. Students will review many of the skills learned during the fiction and non-fiction units of study and use those skills to write text evidence-based responses to literature (both fiction and non-fiction). Students will also write essays comparing concepts and ideas found in two pieces of literature.

Math / Matemáticas
Mathematicians will continue their journey with exploring fractions! We have already learned how to add and subtract fractions, improper fractions, and mixed fractions. Now, we are moving into multiplying and dividing fractions, improper fractions, and mixed fractions! We want to make sure we continue to review how to simplify (reduce) fractions as well. It is important that we also continue to work with word problems using multiple operations and multiple steps to come to our final solutions.
Science / Ciencia
Scientists will continue to explore the microscopic world! It has been amazing to get up close and personal with specimens to see them in great detail. We will continue to learn about plant and animal cells and the parts, otherwise known as the organelles, of the cells. All this investigating of cells will lead us into how all of these cells make up our own human body!

Social Studies / Estudios Sociales
Students will be discovering how geography determines history. They will learn that the physical characteristics of the Western Hemisphere are very varied, and how the geographic characteristics of the Western Hemisphere affect where people choose to live, the way people earn a living, and their everyday life. They are also going to be able to understand how geography, climate and natural resources affect the way people live and work.
5th Grade General Music classes have been studying Rhythm Complements using Stomp. Students are creating Rhythm Complements using various body percussion and things around the classroom, performing them for the class, and assessing their success. We will have a drumming expert John Arucci coming in to work with students to play African drumming circles using classroom and authentic African instruments.
Art / Arte
This month our fifth grade artists are building on their knowledge of color mixing to create the illusion of distance. Students will observe landscape paintings that demonstrate the use of atmospheric perspective and how artists use careful placement of details to create the illusion of depth and distance. They will then create their own unique landscape paintings using the same techniques!
During the months of February and March, students will be participating in volleyball, floor hockey and a gymnastics unit. During our volleyball students will learn to execute basic volleyball skills such as passing and serving. Students will learn how to set, bump, and serve the volleyball. At the end of the unit students will be able to identify the rules of a volleyball game, and will successfully participate in Newcomb which is a small sided volleyball game. In our hockey unit students will learn how to properly hold a floor hockey stick and learn how to stick handle, pass and shoot. At the end of the unit students will participate in a round robin tournament where they will be able to identify the different positions, players and rules in floor hockey. They will have the opportunity to compete in a real floor hockey game. For our gymnastics students were asked to come to class with an open mind. The primary goal of our gymnastics unit is for students to manage their bodies in a variety of different ways. By the end of the unit students will be able to perform a variety of rolls and rotations.
