This Ivy League institution was founded in 1636 which is over 100 years before the Declaration of Independence was signed. This school is named after their first benefactor, the young Minister John Harvard. When he died in 1638, he left his library and half his estate to the institution. Harvard was established by the vote of the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
