St Jerome's Newsletter
Week 2 - Term 1 (Thursday 13 February)
St Jerome’s Primary School acknowledges and pays respect to the Traditional Owners and Elders, both past and present, of the lands on which this school is located.
Dear Parents and members of our school community
The Woodpecker may have to go!
Everything I need to know about life, I learned from Noah's Ark:
1: Don't miss the boat.
2: Remember that we are all in the same boat.
3: Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark.
4: Stay fit. When you're 600 years old, you might have to do something really big.
5: Don't listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.
6: Build your future on high ground.
7: For safety's sake, travel in pairs.
8: Speed isn't always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs.
9: When you're stressed, float a while.
10: Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.
11: No matter the storm, when you are with God, there's always a rainbow waiting!
Message from the Principal
Tomorrow morning we will celebrate Mass especially for the beginning of the 2020 school year. Coming together as a community is always very special and I warmly invite as many parents, grandparents and friends as are able to come, to this Mass.
We are so blessed to live in such a beautiful country where our children have so many opportunities to learn and grow.
In saying this, it is important to keep in our prayers those people who have had a tumultuous start to the year, whether it be related to the recent bushfires, floods, corona virus or that of illness, family loss or family difficulties. We pray especially for those within our community who are suffering and may we embrace them with love, kindness and a gentle heart.
Anniversary of National Apology
Catholic Education Western Australia is a Christ-centred, child-focused community committed to the principles of Catholic Social Teaching. As members of this community, we all have a role to play in working towards truth and justice in our society.
Today, 13 February, is the anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations. This is a day to commemorate this significant event, when Kevin Rudd – then Prime Minister of Australia – made a formal apology to Australia’s Indigenous Peoples whose lives had been devastated by government policies of forced child removal and assimilation.
Please take the time to watch the video here and read today’s article from SBS News “Twelve years since the National Apology, Australia's 'journey of healing' has a long way to go”.
To learn more, read this article on the NITV website: 10 things you should know about the National Apology.
Safer Internet Day 2020
Like many countries around the world, Australia continues to work on how to best safeguard people from online harm, and to promote safer, more positive online experiences for both children and adults. Realistically we know that we can't be with our children every minute of the day, but what we can do is to give them the clearest message about online safety. Support provided by the eSafety Commissioner is excellent with their website providing education, advice and information on online safety for parents, young people, children and even seniors. I recommend families look at this important resource. Please check out the Parent Information below.
Reminder when collecting children prior to the end of the day.
Children leaving school at times other than 3.03pm must be picked up from their classrooms by a parent or other relative. Teachers have a million and one things to attend to and cannot always remember to send a child to the office at a particular time.
Thank you for your co-operation.
Black School Shoes - Reminder
You don't need to pay a small fortune for these shoes.
Big W sells a very comfortable GROSBY black school shoe that is particularly light. Aldi has CRANE brand all leather shoes for around $15. However, dont' take my word for this. Check out the comparisons on the kidspot link.

Free Dress day – Friday 14th February - A Fiver for the Fire Appeal” Day.
We are having a Free Dress Day this Friday 14 February to raise money for the St Vincent De Paul Fire Appeal and calling it ‘A Fiver for the Fire Appeal” Day.
Children are welcome to come dressed in ‘fire brigade colours’ of orange, red or yellow, to honour those wonderful firemen and women who have served in those fire ravaged communities. Our whole school mass this Friday will be focused on new beginnings for all our communities and prayers for those affected by the terrible fires this summer.
We are asking parents, where possible, to donate $5.00 per family, or what they can afford, for the St Vincent De Paul Fire Appeal and to give this to their oldest child to bring along on Friday.
Thank you for your support of this very worthy cause.

St Jerome's Classroom Volunteers are Making a Difference
Dear Parents
We invite you to consider participating in our MAD volunteer program in 2020.
MAD volunteers receive training and on-going support to work with our students to develop skills in the area of Language. Volunteers work 1:1 or in a small group each week at a time that is suitable for both the volunteer and the class. Simple, routine tasks repeated over a period of time provide the opportunity for our students to consolidate basic skills whilst enjoying the interaction of peers and members of the community.
A ‘hands on’ information session will be held on THURSDAY 5th March from 9-10am in the Discovery Room.
We hope you will consider joining the MAD program for term 1 and invite you to come along to the information session on Thursday 5th March or email regarding further information.
