Counselor's Corner
Hi HPE families!
If your child is in need of a coat this winter season, please visit one of the Hamilton County Kids Coats locations during walk-in hours on November 2nd or 9th. Please use this link for more information:
https://kidscoats.org/locations
We are getting ready to start our next school-wide Second Step theme: emotion management. In our morning announcements and classroom lessons, we’ll be prompting students to notice their own feelings by paying attention to clues in their bodies, and we’ll be reminding them to use their Second Step skills to calm down:
- Stop—Use your signal
- Name your feeling
- Calm down: Breathe, count, use positive self-talk
These skills help students calm down strong emotions when faced with learning and social challenges, which helps them succeed academically and get along well with others.
Second Step lessons specifically teach about calming down strong emotions such as anger, disappointment, frustration, and anxiety. You can check out the Home Links on my CANVAS page that describe why managing strong emotions is important and include fun activities to do with your child to help him or her identify strong feelings and calm down. We hope the Home Links will give you tools to use together when your child is upset.
Please let us know if you have questions about how you can help your child learn to calm down at home.
Thank you!

Nurse Notes
From time to time a case of head lice is reported to the school throughout the year. Should a case of head lice be brought to the school’s attention, the school nurse will maintain confidentiality of the student’s identity and assist the staff and parents with educational material. While the odds of your son or daughter developing a case of head lice are relatively small, the following includes useful information on head lice and the signs and symptoms.
Head Lice Information
- Head Lice are small parasitic insects that can be found on the heads of people.
- Head lice feed on human blood several times a day and live close to the human scalp.
- Head lice and head lice nits are found on the scalp, around and behind the ears and near
the neckline at the back of the head.
- Head lice cannot fly or jump; they can only crawl
- Head lice are spread by direct head‐to‐head contact
- Head lice are rarely spread by contact with clothing or personal items (such as combs,
brushes, hats or coats)
- Head lice are not a sign of uncleanliness
- Head lice are not known to spread disease.
Signs and symptoms of head lice infestation
- Tickling feeling of something moving in the hair
- Itching, caused by an allergic reaction to the bites of the head louse
- Irritability and difficulty sleeping; head lice are most active in the dark
- Sores on the head caused by scratching
If your child exhibits signs and symptoms of head lice infestation, you should examine your
child’s head (especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck) for crawling lice and nits. If
crawling lice and/or nits have been found, all household members should be examined for head
lice and/or nits every 3‐4 days. Persons with live (crawling) lice or nits within ¼ inch or less of
the scalp should be treated. We also encourage that you talk with your child’s physician for the best treatment plan.
For more information on head lice and treatment go to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) web site at http://www.cdc.gov
Fever: If your child has a fever > 100.0, they must stay home and can return to school when fever free for 24 hours without use of fever reducing medicine.
Vomiting: Any student who has vomited due to illness must stay home from school and must be vomit free for 24 hours before returning to school.
Eyes: Symptoms of pink eye usually begins with tearing, irritation and redness of the eye and inner eyelids. Children may awaken with sticky “matter” in the eye and the eyelashes stick together. Pink Eye is very contagious. Students are excluded from school and may return after 24 hours of prescribed eye antibiotic drops.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

After School Explorers Needs Your Help!
What is After School Explorers? This amazing event allows the HPE kids to try their hand at and learn about a wide-ranging number of topics and activities. The event includes more than 10 classes held for an hour each day after school. Classes to choose from have included jewelry making, animal ownership, running, and basketball to name just a few. ASE will be held this year from Tuesday, February 25 through Friday, February 28.
Though February seems like a long time away and no one wants to be rushed into winter, the ASE committee has already started planning. This event needs your support to be successful! We need instructors to teach classes – either a topic of your choosing or choose from one of many we have included in the past. We also need volunteers – to babysit instructors’ kids, to assist instructors in their classes, and to help set up the event each day.
A volunteer form has been sent home with your children and is also included in this week’s post. If you are interested in participating, please fill out and send back with your child. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact Kate Ziino at hpe.explorers@gmail.com.
Thanks and let me know if you have any questions!

Nurse Notes – Health Tips
Just a reminder of some important health tips in keeping your student’s happy and healthy
As we start to get into the colder months - a few health tips:
Water! Water! Water!!! Please encourage your child to drink water. Water helps rejuvenate and flush the body system, and with the dry air, it keeps the body hydrated decreasing nose bleeds.
Remind your child to take the time to Wash! Wash! Wash your hands!!! It truly helps stop germs from spreading. With cold and flu season starting already, please remind your child to cover their cough and sneeze and to wash their hands immediately after each cough/sneeze as well as after blowing their nose.
Recess: All students are expected to participate in recess each day. District Policy states that the students will go outside if the temperature is above 15 degrees with the wind chill factored in. Students not able to participate may bring a note from home or from their physician. School policy only allows a student to use a note from home for three days, after which the parent note must be replaced by a Doctors note. Parents need to communicate any recess excuse to the nurse and the teacher. PLEASE, dress your child appropriately with coats, hats and mittens. You can take layers off but you can't put them on if you don't have them!
Report a Student Absence
If your child will be absent from school, please contact us at (317) 915-4210. You may call and leave a message on our attendance line anytime before 8:00 a.m. After 8:00 a.m., our office staff will be available to speak with you and document your child's absence. It is important to let us know your child will be absent or late arrival prior to 9:00 a.m.
If you know your student will be absent for more than two school days for any reason other than illness, we ask that you complete a Prearranged Absence Form (available in the HPE office) at least one week prior to the absence. If you notify your child's teacher of an absence via email, please make sure you also contact the office by phone or email (apowell@hse.k12.in.us) to ensure that attendance is marked appropriately.
Student attendance at HPE is vitally important. Please make every attempt possible to plan appointments and vacations outside of school hours. Regular attendance improves student performance and is expected as an integral part of our state mandated School Improvement Plan.
Veterans Day Tribute Friday, November 8th, 2 pm
The purpose of the Tribute is to give our students and school community the opportunity to express gratitude and respect to Veterans and those in active duty.
