Isolationism to World Power
In today's lesson you will look closely at the Spanish American War and America's Foreign Policy. At the end of the nineteenth century, America transitioned into an industrial country; one that would influence the global economy. This was a time of great hope and anxiety. The major European empires and Japan threatened to exclude U.S. businesses from vital overseas markets. Many Americans felt that their bulging economic power and the foundation of their democratic society entitled them to influence the rest of the developing world. Ideas such as that fueled the age of imperialism. There was a disagreement though over how America should exert its influence. Some Americans wanted to become directly imperialist, equipped with the strongest military and navy in the world. Others favored more indirect means, such as influencing places abroad using economic power or moral persuasion, to preserve global opportunities for American commerce and moderate the worst effects of European imperialism. Still others wanted to remain isolated from the larger world.

You will also write two articles where you pull in several terms that deal with the causes of the Spanish-American War and the US Annexation of Hawaii. I have created a short slide show that outlines the causes and results of this war and linked a Thinglink of Hawaii with hot links that give an overview of the annexation.
Lastly you will create a political cartoon using a web tool of your choice. You will choose from the following topics to create your cartoon:
- Roosevelt Corollary,
- Seward’s Folly,
- Open Door Policy / Boxer Rebellion.
Your cartoon must show your understanding of the topic that you choose. Remember to cite your sources for any web sites and images that you use.
Good luck and be sure to contact me if you have any questions.
