Mayor Betterton's Weekly Update

October 5, 2021

Our hearts are broken and our prayers are with the Sheffield Police Department, their families, and our community. Sgt. Nick Risner paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to The Shoals. We are forever grateful for all of the men and women who serve and protect our community everyday.

STULTS DRUG STORE

In the years around the turn of the twentieth century, Mr. J.W. Stults operated a popular – and profitable – drug store on the northwest corner of Court and Tennessee Streets in downtown Florence. (Jimmy John’s Sandwich Shop is there now following many years as the home of the well-known Kreisman’s Men’s Shop.) With the eye of a true entrepreneur and the savvy of a skilled marketer, Mr. Stults expanded his business by adding a soda fountain (pictured). The reverse side of the picture – which is actually one of many postcards printed in Germany and mailed to local families – says, “You are invited to attend our free soda opening on Friday, May 22, 1908.” No doubt, Mr. Stults and his staff greeted a throng of people who showed up for a free soda on that day and probably returned again and again in the following days and years, bringing others with them, to purchase sodas (and perhaps other merchandise, as well). So, the entrepreneurial spirit that is alive and well in Florence today is simply following the playbook originated by Mr. Stults and other local merchants like him.
