Reader's Workshop
This week we learned about making predictions while we read. We read the book Cookies Week and tried to use the words and pictures to help us guess what would happen on the next page. We are trying to dive deeper into our books and really get a sense of how the characters feel in the book. We used some Mo Willems books and talked about how he illustrated the characters with a lot of emotion. When we take a look at the characters feelings, we can read with more emotion.
Writer's Workshop
This week in writing we started our unit on personal narrative writing. We are doing an illustration study and making noticing of some features that published authors put into their books. We have practiced speech bubbles, writing our words below or above pictures, and have practiced adding details to the people that we draw.
Math
This week in math we learned about number stories. This is a fun and real life way for children to get familiar with addition and subtraction. We learned that we can build our answers with blocks, use our fingers to help us understand, or even draw pictures. We learn different strategies so students can choose the way that helps them understand best. An example of a number story would be, "If John has 3 pumpkins and Sara has 2, how many do they have in all?" This is a great thing to practice with your kiddos in the car or just anywhere! You can chance them around and make them subtraction and make them as hard or as easy as needed.
Sight Words
Please work with our student on the following words:
- Yellow
- Green
- Brown
Along with sight words, it is always helpful to practice letter names and sounds :)
Field Trip Reminders!
- We will leave around 9:30 so please don't be late! We will return to school around 2:00 and continue with our day.
- Send students to school in tennis shoes and a jacket
- If your child is not getting a lunch from school, don't forget to pack one for them!
- There is no need to send extra money for school lunches on that day, it is taken right from their account.
- If you are joining us on our field trip, feel free to meet us there or follow the buses from school! Please check in with the office if you are planning on following the buses.
