Better Together

Families,

All of us at Wiggin Street want to thank all Veterans for serving our country and helping keep us safe and free. We will gather as a Wiggin Street family on Nov. 15th for a flag ceremony in observance of this day. Also, you can read more below about how our students are showing appreciation to soldiers currently deployed.

Our flag ceremony will be recorded and shared with families in the form of a video in next week's update. We would love to include videos of students recognizing a Veteran that is or has been in their life. It's as simple as recording a 1 1/2-2 min. video and emailing them to cgrandstaff@mvcsd.us. The following are examples of questions that may be answered in the video:

1. How is the student associated to the Veteran?

2. What years did the Veteran serve?

3. Which branch of our U.S. Military is this Veteran a member of?

Lastly, our 5th grade students are excited to publish their first video announcement! They have been involved in the whole process writing scripts, recording using a PadCaster and Teleprompter, and editing through WeVideo.com. They have created the announcement through collaboration and have had a Growth Mindset learning from their mistakes. We couldn't be more proud of them! Check out the video below as well as information about our "Donuts with Grownups" event next Tuesday. Hope to see you there!

Best wishes,

Christy Grandstaff

Supporting Our Troops

As you may know, MVMS principal, Mr. Darin Prince, has been called to Active Duty and was recently deployed to the Middle East. Mount Vernon Middle School shared an opportunity with us to show Mr. Prince and his soldiers how much we appreciate their hard work, dedication and sacrifice as they are forced to be away from their loved ones and their country during the holiday season.

Mr. Prince sent the names of the 66 soldiers and 10 war dogs (and their handlers) who are serving in his brigade. As a middle school, they are adopting these men and war dogs and will be collecting items from November 14 through December 2, 2022 to assemble care packages that will be sent to each soldier for the holidays. Our PTO, Friends of Wiggin Street, voted to donate the cost of shipping of 2 boxes per grade level from our school. Each box costs a flat rate of $21.00 to ship. Care packages will be assembled and shipped on Saturday, December 3rd in order for the packages to get to the troops by the holidays. This is a great way for our students to show appreciation through their hard work from fundraising this year.

VETERANS DAY

We will be having a flag ceremony, weather permitting, with our students on the morning of November 15th in observance of Veterans Day. We would like to invite any Veterans that are available to attend, so you may be recognized. The flag ceremony will take place on the front lawn around 9:10 am and is the same day as our "Donuts with Grownups" that begins at 8:00 am, so you are welcome to observe the ceremony which will include the flag raising, Pledge of Allegiance, poems, and the National Anthem.

Dine to Donate event for Wiggins a street Elementary School

Richard Cowdrey- Visiting Author/Illustrator

We are excited to share that Richard Cowdrey, bestselling author and illustrator of the Fiona the Hippo series and Gambier resident, will be visiting all of MVCSD Elementary Schools during the month of December!

The Fiona book series is based on the beloved hippo born at the Cincinnati Zoo. Cowdrey's children's books "Bad Dog, Marley" and "A Very Marley Christmas" also made him a New York Times No. 1 Bestselling illustrator.

He will visit Wiggin Street on December 8th, and the pre-order books are planned to arrive in time for the visit.

Lost and Found

Fall has arrived! Please remind your student to get their sweatshirts and jackets from lost and found. You can also submit this form to let us know what you are looking for, and we will do our best to get it to your child.

Remember that it is helpful to label all jackets, lunchboxes, bookbags, etc.

There is a lot more in lost and found than pictured. It's overflowing! Donations will be made over winter break, so please remind your child to check out the Lost and Found.

No Stress Chess

Having over 50 students signed up for Chess Club is a great problem to have! Unfortunately, we were short on Chess boards, so Friends of Wiggin Street supported the club by ordering 10 new game sets. We thought we would share that the link to the sets purchased because it would be a great gift for the holidays. No Stress Chess teaches kids how to play using illustrated cards that show how the chess pieces move. The 2-sided board has one side that is illustrated and shows the possible movements. They can even draw the cards and move the piece drawn for less stress in deciding what pieces to move and when in the beginning. Thanks, Friends!

WINTER WEATHER

Please remember that students will go outside on days where the temperature with wind chill accounted for is 20°f and above. Be sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather each day. Coats, hats, and gloves are necessary at this time of the year. Boots are required for playing in the snow. If you need assistance with winter outerwear for your child, please contact our school, and we will happily find warm clothes for them.
