Positive Psychology Corner...a new series by Dr. Miller, LPMHS School Psychologist
What is Positive Psychology? In the media we see Dr. Phil and other psychologists helping people work through conflict or treating psychological disorders. This is the side of psychology that addresses problems, but there is another side to psychology, the positive side. Dr. Martin Seligman is a psychologist and one of the founders of Positive Psychology. Dr. Seligman observed that throughout history, psychology has been largely devoted to “relieving misery.” Certainly, relieving misery is a worthy thing to do and psychology has made great progress in treatment of a large variety of psychological disorders. So, psychology has learned how to relieve misery, but then what? What about enhancing happiness, well-being, resilience, performance or achievement? How about enhancing the ability to manage stress, to try new things, take risks or bounce back from adversity? These are topics where the science of Positive Psychology comes in. Consider this: If you could have one wish for your children as they grow up and enter adulthood, what would it be? Many parents will say they wish for happiness or well-being for their children.
This is what Positive Psychology is about and this is what this column is about. We will explore a variety of topics that can help enhance the well-being of our children, and ourselves. We begin next week with a series on resilience, or the skills to manage the tough times. For more information check out Dr. Seligman’s website: www.authentichappiness.org.
