ACADEMIC UPDATES
Math
7on/7A
7O/A
We are now working on solving problems with percents which include taxes, tips, commissions, mark-ups and mark-downs. We will also be computing simple interest using the formula (I=prt) which multiplies principal, rate, and time to figure out interest. (MGSE7.RP.3) These skills are so important and real-life and students are able to see the usefulness of this math even now in their lives. 7A will be starting a PBL, (Project Based Learning), called Shop Til You Drop. We will start on Thursday 1/30 and it will be due at the end of class Monday 2/3. This will be a quiz grade. Students should be able to complete most of it during class. In addition, we will have a short quiz on Friday 1/31 over Scale Factor, Indirect Measurement, and Percents. We will have a test on all of Unit 3-Direct Variation/Proportional Reasoning and all of the other skills mentioned above on Thursday, February 6th. (MGSE7.RP1-3) Please remember that if students have questions, need help, or extra support. There is a math help session every day. The schedule is below.
MATH HELP SESSIONS
70n Thursday 8:00-8:30
7A Thursday 8:00-8:30

Every AM 8:00 Beyer will help any math student!
8A
We had our Unit 5 test Friday, January 24th. This unit was graphing proportional relationships, interpreting unit rate as the slope of the graph. Our next unit will be using functions to compare two quantities, analyze graphs, decipher patterns and interpret scatter plots. It is using everything we have learned so far and applying that knowledge. We will begin the unit on Monday and will be testing on Thursday, February 6th. Please remember, we have daily help sessions and many times the keys and video notes are on google classroom to assist your child.
Social Studies
Social Studies is in the middle of our Middle East History Unit. Students will have a quiz on January 28. Our Junior Achievement trips will be coming up in March so be on the lookout for an opportunity to volunteer and help our kids learn about Personal Finance. The dates printed in the Lions Roar were incorrect, here are the correct dates and the corresponding teachers: Monday, March 9 with Haber, Tuesday, March 10 with Chanco, Wednesday, March 11 with Munzenmaier and Wesker, and Thursday, March 12 with Berger. As cold and flu season is in full swing we could really use some tissue donations. Finally, we are completely out of 3x5 notecards. We will use them several times throughout the history unit, so please send in 2 packs (lined, preferably) pretty please! Thank you!
Science
Students will take the Evolution Test on Thursday, January 30. A study guide has been posted on Google Classroom. We are finishing up the unit learning about cladograms.
We will start our Ecology Unit the week of February 3. This unit focuses on relationships between organisms, matter cycles, energy flow, biomes and the effects of resource availability, disease, climate, and human activity on ecosystems.
Be on the lookout for our upcoming ecology quiz and test dates in February. Those will be announced soon.
A reminder that science help sessions are every Monday and Wednesday morning at 8am.

Reading
Reading classes are working on nonfiction standards such as central ideas and supporting details as well as text structure. We are doing these in conjunction with some of the information coming soon in their social studies classes. We are learning a lot about civil rights, specifically involving South Africa’s Nelson Mandela and Apartheid. We will have a culminating performance assessment focused on the reading standards in class toward the end of next week.
Students in our classes reset their reading goals a few weeks ago. Ask your child what their goal is and how their progress is coming along. Remember, students should be reading 20 minutes each day outside of school.
Language Arts
We have begun Unit 3 – our study of argumentative and opinion-based writing. Students have been learning foundational terms like claim, counterclaim, argument, reason, evidence, and conclusion, and have been applying their knowledge of these areas to their own argumentative writing piece while teachers provide minilessons in these areas, as well as individual and group conferences, to support individual needs. The assignment will be due at the end of class on Wednesday, January 29 and will be graded as a summative assessment.
The 8A course is beginning work on an argumentative PSA. Students will be researching a self-chosen topic from the list of possible topics. Students will then write a short, research-based argument with a correlating, original Public Service Announcement. A Public Service Announcement (PSA) is a message created by an organization where the purpose is to raise awareness about a topic or change the public’s attitude toward or behavior in regard to a social issue. During this summative, you will create a short PSA that focuses on the elements of an effective argumentative/persuasive PSA. The assignment will be due at the end of class on Thursday, January 30 and will be graded as a summative assessment.
All course levels will be assed on this unit’s standards of study on Friday, January 31. This assessment will feature multiple choice or multiple select questions and be taken for a summative assessment grade as well. Students will receive an interactive study guide to help facilitate review today in class. The test will cover the following areas of study: determining theme, central idea, and author’s word choice in nonfiction texts (RI1, RI2, RI4, RI5), tracing and evaluating arguments and author’s perspective in opinion-based text (RI8, RI1, RI2, RI4, RI3), and explaining the functions of phrases and clauses (L1). Students have notes in their composition notebooks, as well as in-class practice assignments relating to these areas on Google Classroom.
Study guides have been pushed out to students via Google Classroom at this time.
Thank you so much for reading! 😊
Sincerely,
Mr. Shea (maternity leave sub for Mrs. Patel), Mrs. Barksdale, Ms. Irvin, Mrs. Barnes, and Mrs. Matthews
Spanish
¡Hola padres!
In Spanish, we are wrapping up some final items in Chapter 2. Your child has been learning prepositions with the verb estar to describe the location of people and objects. This week they are learning how to use larger numbers in Spanish, such as 100s, 1000s and above. Students will have a quiz on numbers on Friday, January 31st. In other news, it’s that time of the year for National Spanish Exam! Please complete the Google Form in Google Classroom to register for the test and pay the $6 testing fee on the AMMS website by Monday, January 27th. Additionally, the first PBA of the semester will be coming up at the beginning of February. All vocabulary, materials and instructions for these tasks are available in Google Classroom. We ask that you please check in with your child regarding their daily study time as they continue their journey en español!
Muchas gracias,
Srta. Brown, Sra. Clark & Srta. Underwood
French
Chers parents,
We are wrapping up lesson 2A.0 discussing our opinion of courses. Sudu’s class will have a PBA the middle of the last week of January and Blackburn’s the end of the third week. We have a vocab quiz over course terms Tuesday January 28. Students can say the different courses well-it’s just a matter of getting the spelling and gender down. Next is lesson 2A.1 where we will talk about activities we not only like to do, but what we do. This is a major lesson on the conjugation (form) of verbs for each different subject.
Students have Quizlets for the year to study vocab and phrases for each lesson at quizlet.com.
In case you didn’t see the email, we are cancelling the trip this year to Québec. Not enough students have registered. I do believe the Coasta Rica trip is still occurring! We’ll revisit doing the trip next year!
Multicultural Night this year is Tuesday March 3rd from 530-730! World Language students have always been great supporters of the event, especially at the France Table. If your child is interested in bringing food to support the France table, hosting and serving at the France table, prepping and/or breaking down the France table, that would be so very helpful! Food sign-up information and more is to come asap. French Clubbers are also highly requested to be a part of the night. It’s understood if you’re not able, however.
As always, please contact your child’s French teacher for specifics, questions, helpful info about your child. We hope you passez un bon weekend!
