St. Columba's Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 3 | WEEK 1 | 23 JULY 2020
Loving God, Our creator, our saviour, our companion, bless this journey of this new term that we undertake. Refresh our souls and renew our spirits as we embrace the beautiful ministry you have called us to.
We welcome those who are new to this community and ask that you strengthen them to share the wonderful gifts you have given them.
Lord, make our hearts pure as we prepare for the return of students to this school, and may you guide them to return with open hearts and minds eager to learn.
We ask this in Your name,
Amen
Message form the Principal
Welcome back from the school holidays. I trust everyone had a great break and took time to rest and take stock after the events of Term 1 and 2. The students have got off to a great start and have settled back into school routine really well.
Our school community would like to welcome all of the new families that have started at
St Columba’s this term. I am sure that it will not take long for them to settle into St Columba’s
school life and be made most welcome by existing families.
We have been advised by Monsignor that at this stage the Sacraments of Penance and Eucharist will be held in November:
- Penance will be on Saturday, 14 November.
- Eucharist will be celebrated on Saturday, 21 November at 6:00pm and Sunday, 29 November at 11:30am. Families will be advised as to which day their child’s class is making their First Eucharist.
- At this stage the Diocese has not set a date for Confirmation.
Please remember, parents or carers, if you are coming onto the school grounds, there is still a need to social distance.
Our Year 3 to 6 classes will be doing some work this term on being different culturally. They will be looking at what it is like to be culturally different and the use of appropriate terminology when
talking with and about people from other cultures.
A reminder to families that students should not be on the school grounds prior to 8:30am.
St Columba’s provides supervision only from 8:30am until the bell goes at 8:50am. On entering the school grounds during the day all visitors are required to sign in at the front office. If students are going to play on the playground equipment after school it is a requirement that a parent must be there to supervise. The school staff do not supervise the play equipment after school. If students are unsupervised on the equipment they will be asked to leave the area.
Families please note that you will need to adhere to the school parking policy and the street
verge signage. Parking is not permitted in ‘no standing or parking zones' and cars that do
not follow the street and verge signage, face a possible fine from the Ranger. Your help in this
matter will be very much appreciated.
Please find a PDF on Cyber Safety that might be helpful when talking about Cyber
Safety at home.
God Bless and stay safe.

The Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum (KS:CPC) is a child safety program for children and young people from age 3 to Year 12. It teaches children to:
- recognise abuse and tell a trusted adult about it
- understand what is appropriate and inappropriate touching
- understand ways of keeping themselves safe.
The KS:CPC is mandated in all schools and is taught every year by teachers who have completed a full day KS:CPC training course. It is a world-class, evidence-based child safety program that is used by a range of other Australian and international schools.
Why we teach children about keeping safe
The School has a legal responsibility to protect children and young people from abuse in its own settings and in the wider community. All children and young people have a right to:
- be treated with respect and to be protected from harm
- be asked for their opinions about things that affect their lives and to be listened to
- feel and be safe in their interactions with adults and other children and young people
- understand as early as possible what is meant by 'feeling and being safe'.
The curriculum follows two main themes:
- we all have the right to be safe
- we can help ourselves to be safe by talking to people we trust.
Focus areas
The two themes are explored through four focus areas:
- the right to be safe
- relationships
- recognising and reporting abuse
- protective strategies.
The focus areas are targeted to the age of the learners. These summaries tell you more about what is taught in each age group:
Parent information to help your child:
- Focus Area 1: The right to be Safe
- Focus Area 2: Relationships

New healthy options on canteen menu
The school canteen is an integral part of the learning environment, and as such should operate in a manner that supports the health messages of curriculum. Schools* are required to follow the Department of Education’s Healthy Food and Drink (HFD) policy.
As part of this St Columba’s have looked into ways to create a greener canteen that offers a range of healthier options. Please see the attached menu for Term 3.
