During his youth he worked hard trying to improve his asthma and other weaknesses. He studied with a tutor until he was accepted by Harvard. There he made good grades and even wrote a book, The Naval War of 1812 , that was published in 1880.
Going into Politics...
After college he married Alice Lee going into the study of law. In 1881, he was elected to the New York state assembly and reelected to two more annual terms in 1882 and 1883. In 1884 Roosevelt experienced two tragedies on the same day: his wife Alice died giving birth and his mother Eleanor also died by a fever. He left politics that year.
