Unit 8: Data and Graphing
I love to see the questions students generate for their graphing experience. Set them up for success, by graphing students, manipulatives, and then move on to graph paper. Be intentional about making connections between all three graphs!
Unit 9: Addition and Subtraction
If you spent time on composing and decomposing, capitalize on this skill and connect it to adding and subtracting. See the great activities in the New Fact Fluency Folder linked in the Unit.
First Grade
Unit 9: Measurement
Set kids up for success! Let them measure items with 1 inch tiles. If you can, then connect the inch ruler to this nonstandard measure. You can do the same with centimeter cubes and the centimeter ruler. In second grade students need to solve problems including estimating measurement.
Second Grade
To line things up, start with tangrams to review basic shapes and composing and decomposing shapes. Then move into polygons, classify and sort 2D shapes. Then... move into 3D shapes by identifying the polygons that appear on the faces. Let the kids touch those shapes and realize the attributes by classifying and sorting in hula hoops.

Positional Words
This is a great opportunity to review shapes like rectangles, triangles, and squares. I like to use teddy bear counters for students to show top, side, across, and other positional words
Equal parts
Sharing it turns out, is a fundamental life skill. I love breaking up some hershey's bars to introduce the concept of fair. Have students share counters out of a bowl and practice giving equal shares to friends at their tables.
Workstation Ideas
Make a Numberless word problem workstation.
Use problems the students can read, and let them put their own numbers in the problems. After this, give them the same problem with grade level numbers. Students should talk about the problems and help each other work out a solution.
Technology Tips
They also have amazing resources! Read aloud math books for PreK, and many other freebies to check out.
