Carlsbad High School's Intervention Counselor
Carlsbad High School has added a new member to its team—Intervention Counselor John Chapman has joined the CHS counseling office, following the Intervention Counselor model implemented at Sage Creek High School last year.
Mr. Chapman’s mission is to create a support system for making sure that every student is successful, especially those needing additional academic and behavioral help. He relies on referrals from teachers and other data to identify students facing barriers to success–such as those who struggled in middle school, are credit deficient, have mental health issues, or have been impacted by COVID–and recommends them for additional support. He uses a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) approach to bring together the many programs and intervention tools available on campus and in the community so that these at-risk students get the help they need to pursue their dreams. He seeks to identify all available resources and connect students to them.
And Carlsbad High School offers students a wealth of resources. In the Lancer Success Class, for example, incoming ninth graders learn effective study habits, wellness practices, and mental health skills, and they also receive additional teacher support. Also, APEX online learning classes give students an opportunity for credit recovery in summer school. A new Advisory curriculum offers lessons that focus on topics such as study skills, mental health and wellness, and college and career awareness. Math Intervention classes offer additional help to students needing extra class time. In addition, peer tutoring and participation in the Peer Assistance Leader program are available for students who would benefit from one-on-one help from fellow students. Counseling 101 and other community college classes, further, let students earn college credits while making up credit deficiencies to stay on track for graduation. Also available are a variety of mental health programs, including Wellness Together, which provides weekly support groups and counseling services.
The challenge, says Mr. Chapman, is to keep students who are struggling academically or socio-emotionally from “falling through the cracks.” He works to find the students who would benefit from these and other interventions, trying to keep them out of jeopardy so that they can grow and thrive. So he works with such students and their families to “keep them in the game.” He connects with students, checks in with them on a regular basis, and monitors their progress. And he helps students to learn to advocate for themselves.
“We are very fortunate to have Mr. Chapman here at CHS,” says Principal Julie Redfield. “He is developing a proactive, systemic approach to identify and serve students who need some extra attention so they can be successful.”
Carlsbad Seaside Academy's Math Whiz
Eight-year-old Enrique Kinry Carrillo, a third grader at Carlsbad Seaside Academy, loves math. He recently entered a Live Mental Math competition (livemcl.com) and scored first place in the nation and 66th place in the world!
Enrique had to prequalify for the competition, so he practiced everyday. After qualifying, he competed in the Grand Finale, in which 5,200 participants were given the challenge of answering 100 questions in only eight minutes. Enrique correctly answered 98 questions–skipping two only because he forgot to go back to answer them–giving him the top score in the US.
He credits his CSA teacher, Ms. Haeussinger, for encouraging him.
“I really liked the competition because it was fun and included math,” reported Enrique. “Next year I am going to try for first place in the world!”
Congratulations, Enrique! Keep up the good work!
