About the Presentation:
This one-day workshop experience will provide an overview of comprehension strategies and activities for grades K-3 that emphasize the integration of listening, reading, and writing to support comprehension. These strategies support understanding of anything that is "read, said, or done". They can be taught and practiced during the reading instruction block, and throughout the school day to support content area learning ( Math, Science, etc). See Outcomes section for more detail.
Participants are encouraged to bring samples of texts they would use for instruction as a resource for activities they will complete throughout the day.
Outcomes:
As a result of attending, participants will:
- List three examples of how oral language and a rich language environment can develop, improve and expand speaking, listening and discussion skills.
- Use three techniques to help students categorize and identify main ideas and key details based on what has been "read, said, or done".
- Demonstrate the use of a topic web and two-column graphic organizer to organize verbal or written information.
- Describe examples of instructional practices that teach students how to transition from retell, to recount, toward summary as they move through grades K-3.
- List the six levels of thinking represented in Bloom's Taxonomy, and at least three question terms that can be used to generate questions at multiple levels of thinking.
