A Message To Families From Mr. Peck
Riverview Families,
Thank you to everyone who came to visit us during parent/teacher conferences last week. These conversations are vital as we work together to support your children in school and life. As with any challenge worth pursuing, there will be ups and downs, celebrations and challenges, and times of rapid growth followed by periods of struggle. I am hopeful that through it all, we can remain partners dedicated to creating the conditions necessary for success for your child and while always modeling the behaviors, mindsets, and attitudes that it takes to be successful. Thank you for working alongside us!
Also, thank you to everyone who contributed to the meals we enjoyed on our parent/teacher conference nights. We were blown away by the generosity we saw! Whether it was soda, chips, cookies, or other yummy treats - it was deeply appreciated by everyone on our team. Thank you!
Finally - keep on reading at home! The PTP sponsored Read-A-Thon is winding down this week and students should be logging their minutes and hopefully collecting some donations from friends, family, and neighbors. Their tracking sheets will need to be turned in by the end of this week and if they committed themselves to reading on their own, they might just be rewarded with a prize! Even after the Read-A-Thon ends, we hope that you and your child can dedicate at least 20 minutes each night to reading. It makes a HUGE difference!
Best wishes for a great week!
Shawn Peck
Principal

Students In Grades 3-5 To Participate in MCA Assessments Starting in April
The Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards are the statewide expectations for student learning in public schools around the state. MCA exams are completed by students each year so schools can receive feedback on our practices and whether or not they are leading to success in meeting these standards and benchmarks. They provide us with data that we can examine to strengthen our instruction as we step forward toward continuous improvement. The results also provide us with a snapshot of individual student learning success. Assessments are an important part of learning, because they help us determine whether or not our ambitious goals are being met. Finally, they inspire us to ask ourselves hard questions such as:
- Are we teaching what we think we are teaching?
- Are students learning what they are supposed to be learning?
- Is there a better way to teach the material to promote deeper learning?
In short, these assessments let us know if we are on the right track so we take them seriously. We want on students to do the same so the feedback we get is as accurate as possible. So much learning has taken place this school year and we are confident that our students will perform well on their MCAs if they give it their best effort. We consistently challenge our learners to try their hardest in all they do, and we know you do the same at home. We will share more information about MCA assessments as they get closer.
School Guidelines for Keeping Your Child Home Due To Illness
Regular attendance is an integral part of your child’s education and school success. The following guidelines should help you decide about when and how long to keep your child home due to illness.
- When a child has a fever of 100 degrees or more, the child should stay home for 24 hours after the temperature returns to normal (without needing medication to keep the temperature down).
- When a child has vomited or had diarrhea, the child should stay home until 24 hours after the last episode.
- When a child has an unexplained rash, please check with your family physician before sending the child to school.
- When your child is not running a fever, but is having excessive secretions, continual coughing or excessively tired it may also be good to keep him/her at home. Extra sleep, fluids, and possibly medication can be effective in resolving these symptoms and preventing a relapse.
- Building nurses will assess students and determine if your child needs to go home if they become ill/exhibit signs or symptoms of illness during the school day.
Please have an “emergency plan” for the care of your child should he/she need to go home from school due to illness. Students who are ill should be picked up as soon as possible to help prevent the spread of illness.
Thank you for your consideration. We look forward to a healthy, productive time in school. Please contact Nurse Lisa Klemmenson if you have any questions.
