Mt Harper
Mt Somers
The past two weeks in Mt Somers we have been focusing on noticing and tipu (respect). We have built an inside whare for when it is cold and frosty so we always have somewhere to breathe and tune in to our breath, our feelings and connect to each other. We have learnt lots of different breathing techniques. For example we learnt the one where we stand up and focus on something in our Whare and we do deep belly breaths.
We learned a lot about Nan’s kowhai tree as we saw the tree falling and its roots exposed but we just walked straight past it. Eventually the class decided to help the tree by standing it up. We put soil over its roots and watered it. We put rocks around it and then every one of us in the class placed a small handful of soil over top of the rocks that we had already placed.
In our Whare we have some animals which are our ngahere and our guides. They all teach us different things. For example, the kingfisher (kotare) teaches us to wait and be patient and it won’t dive into rough shallow waters, they will dive into deep calm waters. In the middle line of our setup we have the Ruru (Owl) and Kahu (Hawk) they both see in different times of the day the Kahu sees in the day and Ruru sees in the night they support each other in their opposite strengths and they teach us how to work with others and support each other. We also have two tohora (whales) which are communicating and sharing their wisdom to each other. As well as kereru and tui they are also having a conversation. Kereru can eat poisonous berries. It shows that you can turn something negative into something positive.
Today we made a waka. We made a waka to show that we are ready to tie everything together that we have learnt and we all gave a stick so we all connected something over ours.

Festival of Cultures
This year Lauriston School is excited to be hosting the very first Opuke Festival of Cultures. Taking place at Lauriston School on Thursday 22nd September, this is an event designed to celebrate not only Te Ao Maori but also to celebrate the rich make-up of cultures that reside across Opuke and Mid Canterbury. We warmly invite all families to come along and watch school performances, take a look at our range of cultural stalls and art displays or purchase foods on offer during the day. At this event, both our Senior and Junior Lauriston Kapa Haka groups will perform.
The festival will begin with a mihi whakatau to welcome participating schools into our school. Throughout the day there will be a range of 20-minute performances on stage, including performances from Mayfield School, Rakaia School, Chertsey School, Our Lady of the Snows and our very own Lauriston students. The Lauriston School Junior Kapa Haka group will be on stage from approximately 9:45am while our Senior Kapa Haka group will perform from approximately 12:45pm. Following the school performances, the festival will finish with a closing ceremony and prizegiving.
At the Festival of Cultures, we have a dedicated area for kai(food) stalls. The Lauriston School Support Group will be running a BBQ at the event and this is an opportunity to get involved with the LSS to offer your support. Equally, we are offering families the opportunity to run a stall of ethnic foods, with all profits made to come back and support the school. If you or your family would like to run a stall of ethnic foods, please contact Laura at laurat@lauriston.school.nz.
Meet Our Lauriston Board Members
We will be introducing our current members over the next few weeks
Kia Ora
It was with extreme honor that I was selected in Oct last year to be part of the BOT for Lauriston school. I can honestly say it has been a total privilege to sit on this board and see the inner workings and progression that goes on behind the scenes. The dedication and commitment from all the staff and strong leadership has put this great little school in a very strong position. Both my boys have grown strong leadership ideals and important qualities during their time at Lauriston, the farm developments, Te Ao Māori and related ideals are features they feel strongly about. I hope to continue working with this team and help govern the school's decision making processes.
