Parenting Corner (More Details: Walk/Bike to School Pilot)
As a reminder for families living in the Belmont neighborhood: starting after spring break (starting on April 2), we are planning on piloting a safe route to school program in which Deputy Puffenbarger (Pence Middle School’s Resource Officer) will be stationed at that intersection on Tuesday and Thursday mornings (rain or shine) from 7:55-8:20am to help students cross Route 33 safely. We are planning to continue this pilot until the last day of school on June 6.
Have a wonderful spring break!
We hope everyone gets outside (and the weather cooperates) and has a fun and safe spring break! The main office will be closed March 25-29 but will reopen for the Teacher Workday on April 1. There is no school for students on April 1 (not joking 😀) so we will see students again on April 2.
Principal’s Super Science Stuff
March Week 3 - Earthquakes!
Observation: Have a conversation about the earthquake that happened here in 2011.
Questions for the Parents/Guardians to share with the students:
Where were you when it happened?
What did you do when you noticed it was an earthquake?
What do you remember thinking? … feeling?
Materials:
Large cardboard box (flattened)
Red Marker (make a target with stripes approx 1-2 inches apart, depending on the size of the box
Sugar Cubes (or similar item) Note: Sugar cubes can most easily be found at Martin’s
2 boards (or 2 large books, the arms of a chair) to hold up the cardboard.
Investigation:
1- Flatten the cardboard box.
2- Using the red (or other color) marker, draw a target
3- Place the cardboard box on top of the boards
4 - Build sugar cube buildings - make sure to place at least one on the bullseye (epicenter).
(Take a picture of your construction and post it on SeeSaw!)
5 - Reach underneath and tap the box where the bullseye (epicenter) is.
6 - Observe what happens to your “buildings” as you continue to tap.
Results:
What happened to the “building” in the center?
What happened to the buildings as they were farther away from the bullseye (epicenter)?
Reflection:
What else could you try using to make your buildings?
Would some materials be more (or less effective) at withstanding the shaking?
