DEATH OF CREATIVITY
Recently, I have been reading through a book called "Ego is the Enemy" by Ryan Holiday. What cracks me up about this is that when we hear the word "ego" our first response is either "well I don't have a problem with ego" or "I know somebody that should read this book." (am I right?) Inevitably we all have an ego problem. Generally most of our insecurities and defenses derive from our ego. Each of us just mask it differently, or more, or less than others.
The vast majority of people aren't "egomaniacs" but ego is there at the root of almost ever conceivable problem and obstacle in every business, project, relationship, or organization. It is there from why we can't win to why we need to win all the time at the expense of others. From why we don't have what we want to why having what we want doesn't seem to make us feel any better.
We don't usually see it this way. We think something else is to blame for our problems or someone else. Often we are asa the poet Lucretius put it a few thousand years ago, the proverbial "sick man ignorant of the cause of his malady."
The issue with ego is obvious. If we don't recognize it in ourselves we will inevitably damage our business, our relationships, our family, or our organization. Let's look outside the obvious.
Too often people can't see what ego prevents them from doing because all they can see is what they've already done.
I like the way Holiday puts it.
"If you start believing in your greatness, it is the death of your creativity. Just one thing keeps ego around - comfort. Pursuing great work - whether it is in sports, art, or business- is often terrifying. Ego soothes that fear. It's a salve to that insecurity. Replacing the rational and aware parts of our psyche with bluster and self-absorption, ego tells us what we want to hear, when we want to hear it."
Ego is a short-term fix with a long-term consequence.
We have to be careful of this small three letter word. The culture we live teaches us that everything revolves around us as individuals and that the world essentially "owe's us for us simply existing" rather than accomplishing.
"A proud man is always looking down on things and people; and, of course as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you." - C.S. Lewis
Don't let ego or past successes kill your creativity!

SECONDARY ART
Mrs. Arsenault's Art II/III students completed an introduction to portraiture unit using charcoal. They were to choose an influential person in their life to draw. Each student worked extremely hard, progressing from a graphite self-portrait with no instruction (starting point) to learning techniques throughout the unit to apply to their final charcoal drawing.
They turned out amazing!
