Math, Science, and Social Studies
We will begin working on our 12 facts in math fluency this week. This is the last fact family we will practice this year. After this week we will work on mixing all fact families together. Continue to work with your child on their math facts each night. Fact cards are in your child's pencil pouch. Also, continue to work on all previous tested facts. We will have our accuracy check on the 12 facts next Friday.
Science-This week we will complete our unit called "Name That Shell". We will complete 2 dichotomous keys and read "A House for Hermit Crab". On Wednesday, we will begin our next unit "Wiggling Worms" where students will create a worm journal and we will explore earthworms. Students will have the opportunity to see habits of real earthworms in our habitats and do different labs with them.
Reading, Writing, and Word Study
Reading--We will continue "Reading like Historians" as we focus on the adventures of Lewis & Clark and Sacajawea. We will be looking at ways researchers gather and organize their information. We will also begin working on summarizing using Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then as our organizer. On Friday we will have our postponed Book Tasting to browse nonfiction reading.
Reminder--all students are expected to have a "grade appropriate" book to read in class every day. (This means a chapter book or a longer non-fiction selection--not Where's Waldo or a joke book). We do classroom library check in and out each Tuesday and Friday, and each class has a weekly trip to the school library.
Writing--Because this is the week of our Great Kindness Challenge, we will use our writing time this week focusing on kindness towards others. We will be writing notes to classmates to show our appreciation. We will also make Kindness posters, and we will write notes to other teachers/staff who we appreciate.
