November 2014
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Families,
November brings chilly weather, the close of first quarter, and much to be grateful for this school year. It is my hope to bottle some of the learning and energy that lives in the classrooms and halls of Matunuck Elementary School through family newsletters.
On behalf of the MES faculty and staff, we'd like to THANK the PTO for all of the enriching events, consistent communication and support for our students! Matunuck School is a great place to be! Thank you!
Best,
Liz

REMINDERS
If your child is tardy to school or picked up early (even by 10 minutes) the state classifies this as an absence. Our children are beginning their educational careers and it is crucial that we send the message that school is important. A key component of school success is ensuring that students are in school for ALL instructional minutes. We want to build habits of coming to school on time, every day, all day for them.
Here is how SK classifies absences:
Excused Absence:
- Doctors Note/Dental/Hospital received within 3 days
- Death in immediate family
- Religious
- Approved School Sponsored Activity (ie. Field Trip)
- Dismissal from School Nurse Teacher
- College Visit Pre-approved
- Court appearance with documentation
- Suspension
- DMV
Unexcused Absence:
- Anything not listed above OR not verified
- Parent/Guardian calls student in sick (You will have 3 days to provide a note)
- Vacation

RECESS:
- If a student is held in for 5+ minutes of recess, you will receive a phone call. The teacher will inform you what happened and the intervention provided for the student. Our goal is to teach expected and replacement behaviors for all students. We all make mistakes, the key is to learn from them.
PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES:
- Parent/Teacher Conferences for South Kingstown Schools are slotted for 3rd Quarter this year...February! Please do not hesitate to reach out to your children's classroom teacher at any point. We believe that communication to and from school is critical for the development our students.
