The Fighting 54th
Overview
The 54th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was formed in March of 1863. It was infantry regiment that saw extensive service in the Union Army during the American Civil War. This regiment was one of the first all Black units during the civil war.
Taking over Fort Wagner
On July 18,1863 at dusk, Robert Gould Shaw led the infantry. Robert Shaw was later killed in the attack on the fort.

The movie Glory is based on the 54th Massachusetts

He surviveed the battle of Fort Wagner and then after became the first african American to be awarded the medal of honor because of his gallantry during the Battle of fort Wagner
