Weekly Warrior Update
Student Focused-World Class
Word for the Warrior...
On behalf of the teaching staff at John Sevier, I would like to invite you to our 2016 PTSA Fall Open House. Open House will be held Thursday, August 25 from 4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Open House provides teachers with the opportunity to distribute information and answer questions regarding their courses. JSMS Open House is held in a "drop in" style with school-wide information present in the library. Open House is not the appropriate time for full blown parent/teacher conferences. 90 minutes is simply not enough time for this type of meeting. Open House is, however, an appropriate time to schedule a future conference. We look forward to seeing everyone on Thursday (4:30-6:00)!
We are also excited about the number of devices that we have been able to deploy to students. If you have not yet signed the Responsible Use Policy (RUP), paid your $50 Tech fee or signed a waiver for your child's device, we encourage you to do so. You can choose to allow your child to take their device home for full access or to be a "day user." Please know that should you need it, the $50 Tech fee will go towards paying for any damage done to your child's computer. I also want to assure you that we understand that accidents do occur from time to time. If your child has a computer that suffers damages as a result of an accident (and not intentional damage or negligence), we are more than willing to have a conversation with you and waive the cost of the repair due to an accident. Accidents happen. As a part of achieving our district vision and mission of being "Student -focused, World-Class" and in taking our commitment seriously in supporting all students to be college and work-force ready, we believe it is critical to embed instructional technology into the daily learning experience for our students. Also, by the very nature of technology, we believe that this provides a more engaging learning environment for our students. Please feel free to call us if you have any questions or concerns regarding our 1:1 program.
Thank you for all of your support and engagement! We are off to a great start!
**The video below is from the movie Freedom Writers. It is a powerful movie and if you have not watched it, it is a MUST SEE! The clip below exemplifies the work we do every day and is an example of how success is achieved student by student. (The clip below DOES include offensive language. I attempted to find the clean version, but one does not exist. Feel free to ignore the video if you would rather not hear a profane phrase.)
Proud to be a Warrior,

Flexible Seating and Walking Time to Meet New TN Physical Activity Law
Kingsport City Schools
is incorporating new ways to help students be more active in an effort to meet a Tennessee law that requires kids to get more physical activity in school. KCS has implemented these changes as part of the state’s new physical activity law that went into effect over the summer.
Under the new law, K-1st graders have to get 225 minutes of physical activity per week in school and 2nd-6th graders are required to get 160 minutes of activity per week. Students in 7th-12th grades are still required to get 90 minutes of physical activity in school per week.
