Olympic Middle School
Weekly Message for April 15-April 19
Good afternoon Olympic families and staff!
Reteaching went well last week with students and staff spending time in class reviewing expectations and sharing in discussion during class meetings. Students worked together to create agreements on how we work together and treat one another. Watch Facebook next week for a few examples of the work they did!
We have some fun events occurring over the next few weeks:
- This Friday (April 19) students will be traveling to SHS for Junior Programs. We have two showings with students attending either the 10:30 or 12:30 performance. Students will watch a production of “Frindle”. We are excited to share this experience with our students. No permission slip is needed. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to your student's homeroom teacher. Here is link to Shelton Junior Programs: Shelton Junior Programs ~ Shelton, Washington – A non-profit organization that brings live theater performances to local elementary students at a low cost.
- Friday, April 30th, our 5th grade students will participate in the Forest Festival Field Day at the Mason Lake Recreation Area. Please watch this week for a letter sharing information and a permission slip coming home.
- Friday, May 3rd will be our next PTSO/OMS school social after school until 4:00 pm. Watch for more information coming soon.
As the year winds down, we have more team and grade experiences coming up. We will share these are they are scheduled.
Our state assessment will begin the second week of May. Students in grades 5 and 6 will take the ELA and Math CAT/PT assessments. Additionally, students in grade 5 will take the state science assessment. We will be sending home information, test taking tips and our testing schedule soon.
Intramurals:
- Practices will run from 2:45-4:30 M, T, Th, F
- Students must attend their scheduled classes during the day to participate in practice or meets.
It can be challenging as a parent to guide our students in this digital age. What our students are dealing with is vastly different than when we were 10-12. We have students and parents reporting that cyberbullying is occurring through social media. This is one of the several reasons we limit phone usage during the school day. While this cyberbullying is occurring outside of our school building, the impact of these experiences filter in. I have included an article that I read from the Cleveland Clinic that shares some important information parents might want to consider and share with their children. Negative Effects of Social Media (clevelandclinic.org).
Let’s have a wonderful week at Olympic!
