KP Connection - Sunday Edition
March 26, 2017
Lead Learner Highlights
This time of year also brings our state testing season. Eighth graders will be taking the Science CMT on Tuesday, and in April and May students will participate in the Statewide assessments. You should have received a letter explaining the purpose of this assessment along with an overview of the time frame. To limit disruption to students' schedules, testing will happen in regularly scheduled ELA (April 25, 27 and 28) and Math (Mary 1, 2, 4, 5) classes.
Finally, I want to thank all of you for the ways you have supported our school and staff during the budget conversations. As it has been stated, these are not easy times; however, I appreciate the ways you have shared your voices, your ideas, and our school community.

Congrats to students who attended the Connecticut TSA State Conference on Saturday. Ms. Fielding reports:
Students competed in multiple events including VEX IQ robotics, Tech Bowl, Problem Solving, and Dragster Design. Each of our students earned a trophy at the event, which is a huge accomplishment for a first-year chapter.
Avi J., Omar B., and Branden K. won 3rd place in Tech Bowl. They competed against many other middle school teams in trivia questions related to STEM. Our students were studying before and even during the conference to learn as much as they could in preparation for their competition.
Caleb L., Sam S., and Jack H. (not pictured) won 2nd place in VEX IQ robotics. They had to work cooperatively with other teams to earn points in the robotics challenge. Our students were great at strategizing and communicating with other teams, and they did a great job working together as well. All in all, we had a very good conference.
King Philip is proud to be among the Sedgwick and Conard chapters in WHPS.

King Philip’s Celebrity Chef!
The Foundation for West Hartford Public Schools is proud to have King Philip’s own Joy Wright as a Celebrity Chef for our annual West Hartford’s Cookin’ event on Saturday, April 1st from 6:30 – 9:00 in the Town Hall.
West Hartford’s Cookin’ is the Foundation’s annual fundraiser. All money raised supports grants awarded to teachers to implement their creative and innovative ideas that enhance students’ education.
The theme this year is “No Foolin’, it’s a FACT!” Committee members are excited to uncover facts from the schools and share them with guests. For example, did you know that the honorary chair, Town Manager, Mr. Ronald Van Winkle, attended Duffy Elementary School’s first Kindergarten class?
All are invited to join Joy and other celebrity chefs as they delight you with their signature dishes. Enjoy an evening of food sampling and fun with live and silent auctions and a chance to Raise the Paddle for the Foundation!

"Public Act 16-189
We believe that it is vital for all students in West Hartford Public Schools to be able to efficiently and effectively use digital tools that empower them in all phases of the learning process, including research, problem solving, content creation, communication, and collaboration. We also believe that we must be committed at all times to protecting students' privacy and providing them with a powerful and safe educational experience. To that end, the West Hartford Public Schools follow the legal requirements of Public Act 16-189 to promote the safety and security of all students and staff.
In compliance with Connecticut State Law, we update online programs used within the district that house student data. The programs may be used district-wide, in a very small number of classrooms, or with individual students. The list will be updated each time the district enters into a new contract where student data is housed. For more information on the specifics of Public Act 16-189 and updates of vendor agreements, visit www.whps.org/pa189."
