Chisholm Update
July 2020 Information
The Adventure Awaits!
This document and the student handbook are updated with COVID safety measures that EPS and Chisholm will be taking. Please keep in mind that as COVID precaution protocols from our federal, state, and local governments change, our safety measures may change as well.
One thing we want to prioritize this year, of course student and staff safety, but we will focus on assuring the student experience remains fun and adventurous. "Perception and attitude make a huge difference in how kids handle things. For example, if we talk about masks as these cool new things we need to wear to keep others safe and look, mine has puppies on it and yours has Poke'mon on it and that is so awesome, the kids will respond better to that. If we talk about ourselves as teachers and how we are learning new things along with our students, we help build those bonds that make the school year go much more smoothly. If we as a team of parents and teachers do this right, we hope our students will see these safety measures as an adventure!"
Procedures and practices that are being created right now will be analyzed and evaluated throughout the course of the year. Adjustments will be made frequently as necessary. It is our commitment to have traditional school with students here in classrooms 5 days a week. We also know that this school year will look completely different from any previous school year. With all the uncertainty and change as we start this adventure, the ability to display grace and compassion will be vital. The changes we make are not all going to be agreed upon or popular, but they will be made in the hopes of increasing safety. We look forward to seeing the students and hope you enjoy the rest of your summer.

Chisholm Mission:
To impact and empower our community of learners to be responsible, productive citizens.
Chisholm Vision:
All Chisholm students will be proficient learners at grade level or above and will exhibit positive character traits that will enable them to be responsible and productive members of society.
- Provide differentiated instruction to meet the learning needs for all children.
- Recognize that children are developmentally different and learn at individual rates of speed.
- Provide learning opportunities which strengthen and enrich the whole child (i.e. social, eotional, physical, as well as academic.)
- Create a safe, nurturing environment in which students will be able to experience success.Realize that a child’s success and growth is a team effort involving parents, teachers, and students.
Chisholm Motto:
MASKS FOR STUDENTS
*There are times when masks should be worn in school- at the teacher table when social distancing to other students and teacher is not possible, at center time when social distancing is not possible, and any other small group time.
STUDENT ABSENCES
EARLY CHECKOUT is discouraged.... and will count towards their total absences.
Students will not be called out of class until a parent is present to sign them out. Please plan ahead for appointments, as students are learning from bell to bell and miss valuable instructional class time when checked out. If you do have to check your child out early, please try to do so before 3:00, as classes and students will begin preparing for our 3:25 dismissal.
Student illness & Exclusion Policies
COVID-19 SYMPTOMS AT SCHOOL If a teacher suspects that a student may have COVID-19 symptoms, he/she will contact the office to arrange for an adult to come to the classroom and escort the student to an isolation room. Parents will be contacted immediately to pick up their child and seek a medical opinion.
Exclusion Policy
To prevent the spread of disease and to protect your student, please keep your student home for the following symptoms:
- temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher (must be fever free with no medication for 24 hours before return to school)
- vomiting (must be vomit free for 24 hours before return to school)
- diarrhea (must be diarrhea free for 24 hours before return to school)
- head lice - Students can not return to school until they have been treated and examined by district nurses.
If a student becomes ill during school, the parent/guardian of the student will be contacted and if student meets above criteria, student must be checked out to go home. It is important to provide your student's school with updated contact numbers so parents/guardians may be reached concerning illness, as well as emergencies.
Medication Policy
If your child requires medication to be given at school, please contact the office immediately. There are forms to fill out and specific procedures to follow. This is the EPS policy regarding medications:
Programs, Events, Guests
Due to COVID safety measures this year, we will not have in person programs and special events. As the year progresses, we will look to or try and replicate some of those events through video if possible. Charge ups and school gatherings in the cafeteria will also not occur. We will look to replace those activities with virtual events when and wherever possible.
Guests: There can be no guests in the building to protect our students and staff by minimizing possible exposures to COVID. District procedures also state no parents can have breakfast or lunch with their child in the cafeteria this year.
A small number of guest exceptions can be made by contacting the school principal for an appointment.
-One PAL can be assigned to work only in the workroom at a time, but no small children can attend with the PAL. This will be coordinated through the PTO PALS committee leader and principal.
-One Media helper or volunteer can work in the media center if the time has been arranged with Media Director.
-Appointments for meetings and conferences can be prearranged with the teacher and principal. We would prefer to meet through a virtual platform if possible to reduce and minimize the potential for spread.
*All of these approved guests must participate in a screening, including temperature check and symptom questions.
Lunch and Recess for our students
Lunch: As long as possible, lunch will still be in the cafeteria. Students will still sit by class but only on one side of the table and skip every other seat. We are still working out the schedule , which will be released closer to the start of school. District procedures also state no parents can have breakfast or lunch with their child in the cafeteria this year.
Recess: As long as possible, students will still have outside recess when weather permits. Classes will be assigned zones to remain in that will rotate each day.
Dismissal - Car Rider Plus
This same system can be used for bus riders and walkers since every student will have an assigned number. It will also give us the ability to track how and when students are picked up or leave the school property.
More information about this Car Rider Plus system will be sent out as we get closer to school.
You can watch a video of this process in action that was made Frontier Elementary School last year.
