Principal's Corner- Tim McCormick
A big congratulations and thank you to all out winter student athletes, coaches, and parents. Several teams and individuals found post season success and we are thankful for our outgoing seniors who competed hard and made us proud!
World Language Week- Ms. Batchelder
For National World Language Week, the World Language Department promoted and celebrated diversity through languages and culture throughout this past week. We incorporated multilingual and multicultural displays around the school, including greetings and foods, as well as morning announcements with different languages and facts that pertained to each day’s theme (Monday to Friday: heritage, international foods, languages, holidays, and flags, respectively). Culture Fair projects were on display all week in the Media Center, and will also be presented at the Celebration of Learning on March 26th.
On Tuesday the department led a group of students on a local outing to Maison de Manger down the street to try crepes, an authentic French food. Faculty members around the school participated by hanging flags of our heritage outside classrooms, as well as signs with the languages we speak.
Throughout the week, students competed by Advisory in a human scavenger hunt, with the winning Advisory earning an International Breakfast sponsored by World Language teachers. We look forward to continuing our celebration of diversity here at NHS.
Art Corner- Jen Mulkerrin
This past month we explored interior space in our home rendering unit. Staying with the style of the house designed and depicted in the exterior drawing, students were asked to select one room in the house to draw from the inside. Students completed these interior space drawings using the opposite form of perspective from the exterior, one point perspective. Students again were asked to include previous learned skills to complete their artworks. Students had to include shading to indicate light and color as well as use lines to depict varying surface textures.
Mid Month we shifted from drawing to building. The first section has already completed 3D sculptures that will prepare us for building 34D floor plans for the final. Currently the second section is in the middle of completing their sculptures. When we swap again we will begin working on our final project. Students will all be given the same basic floor plan and then asked to create an addition for a “client”. The “clients” will be volunteer teachers that are given different reasons for the addition such as, expanding family, aging parents, or an in home business. Students will have to take into consideration the needs and wants of their clients as they design an addition to the house. I look forward to sharing these with you in next month's newsletter.
