Welcome to Week 33!
Happy Mother's Day!
I hope that this weekend has been one of joy and celebration for your family. I am thankful for all the wonderful moms and caregivers who trust us to care for their precious child. You are appreciated!
We had a wonderful week celebrating our teachers and staff. Thank you again to our community partners and the PTSA for making it so special. On Wednesday we will celebrate our school nurses with lunch and a massage. We are so grateful for our school nursing team-Nurse Hill and Nurse Dilworth!
Tomorrow we will kick off the spring testing season with SOL pep rallies during the PE/electives blocks. Students are encouraged to wear Wolverine gear and have F-U-N! Please review the testing schedule that I shared via email last week and I have included an additional testing note below. Thank you for your support as students show off all that they have learned this school year!
Let's make it a great week 33!

SOL Testing Letter & Schedule
SOL Test Grade
As you know, our students will be taking the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) Tests this month. We know they will do an amazing job! Our students and teachers work diligently all year to prepare for these, they come with fantastic attitudes, and always take the tests very seriously. While receiving a passing, proficient, or advanced score on the SOL is a wonderful reward for hard work, we would also like to acknowledge our students’ diligence by doing the following:
-For all core academic courses with an SOL test (see list below), every student who PASSES the SOL will earn a grade titled “SOL Participation” in the Test category for Marking Period 4.
95% grade for “Pass Proficient”,
100% grade for “Pass Advanced”, and
105% grade for a 600 Score, which is the highest score possible.
If the student does not pass the SOL, then the grade will be “excused” and neither increase nor decrease the student’s marking period average.
This is an opportunity which could significantly benefit any student who would like to raise his/her MP4 grade.
Students who do not pass their specific SOL (scoring between 375-399) may take an “Expedited Retake” of the SOL after a brief remediation period (more information will follow).
Core Academic Courses with an SOL Test:
6th, 7th, & 8th Grade English: Reading SOL
7th Grade Accelerated Social Studies, 8th Grade Civics: Civics SOL, World History SOL
7th Grade Advanced Science, 8th Grade Physical Science: Physical Science SOL, Earth Science SOL
6th, 7th, & 8th Grade Math: Math SOL
-For all high school credit core academic courses with an SOL End-of-Course Test, students will also complete a final exam.
Parents and Guardians, thank you for helping your child prepare by getting plenty of rest and by restarting his/her laptop each evening. Students should arrive at school by 8:25 A.M. with a fully charged laptop ready to highlight all they have learned this year! If you have any questions about these opportunities, please contact your child’s school counselor at 804-515-1100. Best wishes for a great SOL testing experience!

Middle School Summer Remediation
Parents/Guardians will receive communication from Teachers and School Counselors if students are required to participate in this pathway. Students currently in the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade will need to enroll in a course recovery class during the 2021-2022 school year who did not pass one of their core academic classes. Please know that course recovery classes are only available to students who need to repeat the course. These classes are not an option for students taking the class for initial credit (i.e., first time or for a higher grade). Transportation will be provided. The registration window opens on April 11, 2022. Courses are only open to current Henrico County Public Schools students.
OPTIONAL: BRIDGE TO ALGEBRA - Rising 7th and 8th graders This program is designed to support students who completed Accel 6/7 or Accel 7/8 and are enrolled in Algebra I for the upcoming school year. Students complete assignments virtually but have access to live support via office hours with teachers. Additional information regarding registration is available in the HCPS Middle School Counseling Departments.
Creative Writing/Public Speaking Students will have the opportunity to explore the techniques used in writing short stories, plays, and poetry. The course will also focus on public speaking skills, and exploration of dramatic skills such as improvisation, gestures, and voice projection. Students will have the opportunity to write scenes, dialogue, and speeches. (Please note: This class is not for credit and will not be added to the student’s academic transcript.)

Attendance
It is important that students attend school each day and arrive on time to ensure they are receiving all of their instruction. Please see below for important information regarding attendance.
· School starts at 8:05 each day. Students are considered tardy if they arrive at 8:30 or later.
· Notify the school by calling the front office at (804) 515-1100 if your child will be absent from school. If we are not notified of an absence, your child will be marked absent unexcused automatically.
· Our attendance team regularly monitors student attendance. Families of students with five or more unexcused absences will be required to meet to develop a support plan for attendance.
· If there is anything we can do to support your efforts in making sure your child is at school every day, please reach out to your child’s school counselor or our Family Advocate, Mrs. Clarke!
