Here is our short story!
GO READ IT BEFORE YOU CONTINUE!
(ALL OF THE FOLLOWING EXAMPLES ARE FROM THIS SHORT STORY)
IMAGERY
Using the 5 senses to create a picture in the reader's mind. (sight, sound, touch, taste and smell)
cracking nuts on the branches of the old trees, and every now and then a
rabbit would hurry away through the tall ferns, or a great bee come
buzzing near her, and she would stop to watch it gathering honey from
the flowers, and wild thyme" This is an example of Imagery because it gets a picture in your head of what the woods felt like and what you saw.
CONFLICT
Examples:
Man vs fate
"If he frightened her, and then they would kill him."
Man vs self
Now, grandmother was very feeble, and often kept her bed; and it happened that she was in bed the day Little Red Riding Hood went to see her.
Man vs man
The wold and the dog were still fighting when Hugh, the woodman, came in and killed the wicked wolf with his axe.
Man vs nature
"Red Riding Hood thought grandmother must have a cold."
TONE
Example: "Come in," said the wolf, in a squeaking voice. "Pull the string, and the latch will come up." This shows tone by how the wolf is speaking in a squeaky voice and it shows the way he is trying to get the message across.
SUSPENSE
When an author creates a sense of worry, uneasiness, or nervousness in the reader for what will happen next.
PACING-
Is when an author speeds up or slows down the story for an affect. The reader will find pacing as a way to help build the suspense of a story.
Example: "Very soon the wolf, who was quite hungry after his run, ate up poor grandmother. Indeed, she was not enough for his breakfast, and so he thought he would like to eat sweet Red Riding- Hood also. Therefore he dressed himself in granny's nightcap and got into bed, and waited for the child to knock at the door. But he waited a long time."
This shows pacing by how the story is telling you that the wolf is waiting for Red Riding Hood and its making you wait to see the result.
THEME-
It is a main idea or a meaning of the literary piece which may be stated directly or indirectly. It can relate to people or things that will happen in life. It can be a lesson from what you or somebody else has done and has learned from it.
Example: The theme in Red Riding-Hood is if a situation seems different from what a person would normally do, then don't make that decision.

Logical Appeals
An appeal that addresses listeners' reasoning ability.
Example: This picture shows options to where the listener is persuaded to make a decision based on facts.
Emotional Appeals
It is where it strengthens a persuasive argument by playing on the readers emotion using fear or sympathy. To help it, writers use strong adjectives and clear outlines to help the writing.
Example: This picture is an example to what an emotional appeal is because it uses words that try to persuade you to take part in what their cause is.
Ethical Appeals
Ethical appeal refers to the skill of persuasive speaking or writing that is meant to make one accept a specific point. It is usually based on the writer's and speaker's reliability and at the same time appeal to one person's moral values.
Example: This picture shows a situation where the listener can determine if it is right or wrong based on the damage that smoking creates.
Point of View
It is the eyes and mouth in which the story is told and seen through (The perspective in which the story is told).
Example: I am waiting in the woods, it as dark and I am scared to death (1st person because it uses the word I). You have an error in your paper (2nd person because it uses the word you). He is walking the dog in 35 degree weather (3rd person because it is talking about somebody else. The narrator would talk in 3rd person). (This example is not from the short story).
Symbolism
Example: This shows an endless road which represents that life keeps going. If you make a mistake life doesn't stop it keeps going for everybody. If someone makes a bad mistake and they want to be a better person they could get back on the right track. No matter what our life keeps moving on and does not stop, just like the road doesn't stop.
