Hansen Weekly Update
September 23, 2022
Hi Hansen Students, Parents, and Families!
We have had a busy and exciting week here at the Hansen, and it is hard to believe that we suddenly find ourselves with just one week of school remaining in September. Hopefully, the upcoming three day weekend allows each of our students and families an opportunity to relax and enjoy some Fall fun. And, we want to wish a very happy Rosh Hashanah to all those that celebrate!
Please enjoy some of this week's highlights below...
Creating a Culture of Equity, Achievement, Inspiration, and Joy!
Health Screenings
The health office will be conducting state mandated screenings for vision, hearing, postural and heights/weights (BMI). Grades 4 & 5 will be done on Tuesday, October 4. Grades 2 & 3 on Thursday, October 6. Grades K & 1 will be done on Thursday, October 13.
If your child has a medical condition excluding them from the mandated health screenings, please provide the health office with a physician signed letter for exclusion.
Below is information from the Canton Public Schools Handbook regarding the
screening policy:
SCREENINGS
Health screenings are mandated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and are conducted in the following grades at the Hansen School.
Vision: Grades 1-5.
Hearing: Grades K-3
Body Mass Index (BMI): Grades 1 and 4
Spinal Screening: Grade 5
* If a parent wishes to waive the state mandated screening for BMI or postural screenings, a request in writing must be submitted to the school nurse prior to the scheduled time for those screenings. Parents that wish to waive the BMI screenings must send in a letter to the health office annually stating their wishes.
Parents/guardians are notified in writing when a student does not pass their health screening.
School nurses will work with families to obtain the appropriate referrals and follow-up services as needed.
Grade 5 Spinal Screenings: Girls please bring a bathing suit top, halter top or sports top. Boys will be asked to remove their shirts. This will take place in a private room next to the nurse’s office.
As always, feel free to call or email Nurse Bethany or Nurse Kathy with any questions or concerns.
Best,
Bethany Glennon, BSN, RN and Kathy Leavitt MA, BSN, RN
