Principal Shoutout!
This week ran a successful lockout drill! Please have conversations with your students how they think this went. If you feel there is any confusion with your child's understanding of this drill please inform their homeroom teacher or the office so that we can ensure ALL students feel safe and ready for future drills.
We will be running a lockdown drill within the next few weeks. When running this drill we will come over the intercom and say the following:
- LOCKDOWN! Locks, Lights, Out of Sight.
Teachers and students move to a safe place within the classroom, lights are turned off, and they lock the classroom door.

Fire Drill & National Fire Safety Week
Fire fighters will be coming to the building practicing their response times and also practicing a building check.
During this drill we will actually go to our evacuation locations and safety zones.
If you have any additional questions about this great learning and collaboration with our fire fighters, please contact the office.
4th Grade Happenings!
Math-We are working hard on rounding numbers. Then, we use what we have been learning about rounding on estimating numbers using real world problems. We have also been working on math boxes reviewing and practicing skills.
Literature-We are continuing to dig into the elements of a mystery. We are still working on character traits. We are reading, reading, reading!!! Please make sure your child is reading at home.
5th Grade Happenings!
Science: We are continuing our plant study. We’ve discussed photosynthesis, the parts of a flower, pollination, and seed making. Please be studying your notes as a quiz and then a test will be coming next week.
Math:We continue to work on area and volume. We have learned the formulas so that we can figure the area and volume. Test will be coming soon.
Reading/S.S.: This week in reading we have extended using our context clues to help us determine the meaning of figurative language, such as similes and metaphors in text. We have practiced finding similes and metaphors in our independent reading books. In social studies, students finished up and presented their creative maps. In writing, we have just started working on generating ideas for our personal narrative writing.
You will be receiving your child’s FAST test results. Please be looking for that in their book bags in the next few days.
6th Grade Happenings!
In science, students are looking at data and using evidence to support the claim that Earth’s plates are in constant motion. They are also examining the break up of the supercontinent Pangaea.
In math, students are continuing to work on Greatest Common Factor. They are using factor trees and factor pairs to figure out the GCF.
In reading we are making inferences. We have practiced this skill with pictures and are now moving to text.
Band
If you practice, you get better.
If you get better, you play with better players.
If you play with better players, you play better music.
If you play better music, you have more fun.
If you have fun, you want to practice more.
If you practice more, you get better…

Music Mania
General Music Grades 5 & 6
This week the students viewed the video STOMP Out Loud. This shows teamwork when performing percussive pieces. The group utilizes everyday objects to create their rhythmic pieces. The students will form groups of 3-5 members to create their own rhythmic compositions. They will be asked to plan and explain the form of their composition. A steady beat must be evident to the audience. The performance should be musical (dynamics, phrasing, changes in texture…) and creative! Looking forward to seeing how students apply their musical knowledge!
General Music Grade 4
Students viewed videos reviewing notes on the lines and spaces of the treble clef staff. We practiced drawing treble clefs, identifying whole notes, half notes and quarter notes. We are preparing for our recorder unit beginning in November.Special Education News
Counseling News
Greetings! The Counseling Office has moved to room 205 at the south end of second floor at GCIS. My new extension is 240. All are welcome to come for a visit.
In life Skills class students are learning about empathy and kindness. Empathy is putting yourself in another person’s situation and feeling what he/she is feeling, and supporting that person. Students are seeing how empathetic listening and kind acts can greatly support their friends, family members and others in their lives.
