RMS Knightly News
Week of March 18th, 2024
Hello RMS Knights and Families
March's Honor the Castle theme is "Overcoming Obstacles". We defined obstacles as something that obstructs, hinders, interferes with, or prevents our knights’ actions for making progress, growth, and achievement. This week’s Mindset Monday Message for the week of March 18th, states that “Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle.”

SECOND STEP Lesson 13
7th Grade -Lesson 13 What Makes a Conflict Escalate
Summary- In this week’s lesson, our 7th grade knights will examine common reasons social conflicts escalate from minor to major.
At home question to ask your 7th Grade Knight-
With your 7th grade knight, please share a time in your life when you were involved in an escalating conflict. What do you wish you had done instead? Ask your knight if they are part of a conflict right now that they need help with.
8th Grade - Lesson 13 My Stress Management Plan
Summary- In this week’s lesson, your 8th grade knights will complete their own stress-management plan. It will include their own signs of stress, the situations that contribute to their stress, strategies they can use to relieve stress, and people they can reach out to for help or support.
At home question to ask your 8th grade Knight- Ask to see your Knight’s stress-management plan. Talk about the strategies they’ve identified and offer your support if you see them displaying any signs of stress.

RMS CARE CLOSET INFORMATION
RMS Amazon Care Closet efforts continues through the remainder of the school year
We are pleased to announce the establishment of the Amazon Care Closet at Richards Middle School. The Amazon Care Closet is a dedicated space where students in need can access essential items such as toiletries, snacks, and other basic necessities. This initiative aims to support our students by addressing their basic needs, ensuring they can focus on their education without the added stress of lacking essential supplies.
The Amazon Care Closet is a convenient and discreet resource for our students. It is stocked with variety of items, including but not limited to:
- Toiletries (such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, and feminine hygiene products)
Snacks (non-perishable food items)
Basic school supplies (notebooks, pens, pencils)
We understand that students may face challenges both inside and outside of the classroom, and we believe that providing these basic necessities can make a significant impact on their well-being and academic performance. Our goal is to create a supportive environment where every student can thrive, regardless of their circumstances.
If you are interested in donating items, please access the Amazon Care Closet link here. Donations will be sent directly to Richards Middle School. If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Skladanowski directly.
We believe that the Amazon Care Closet will positively impact our school community and ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed. We encourage you to share this information with your child and let them know that this resource is available to support their needs. Thank you for your continued support of our school and our mission to create a nurturing and inclusive environment for all students.

Math 8 students celebrate Pi Day
Pi Day was celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. Pi Day is an annual opportunity for our RMS Knights to measure objects, review principles of Pi, talk to their peers about math, and enjoy tasty treats.
Breakout EDU in Computer Literature
In computer literature class, our students participated in digital Breakout EDU games by using their prior knowledge to solve problems around digital citizenship and safety.
Creating Tessellations in Art
Tessellations are a fun, hands-on way to explore STEAM principles. Certain basic shapes can be easily tessellated: squares, hexagons, triangles or combination shapes, complicated shapes, and animals can be used to create the image.
Congrats to our RMS Science Olympians on their success at regionals
During the regional 7 contest at Macomb Community College on Saturday, our knights (Reuben A., Isabella G., Allison T, Gabriella W. and Knight alum- Brent W.) placed
1st place in Anatomy and Physiology, 2nd place in Dynamic Planet, 1st place in Fast Facts,
5th place in Reach for the Stars, 2nd place in Road Scholar and 8th place inTower.
Our Castle Crew Members of the Week will return in next week's smore recognizing week 23 and 24

Gleaners Mobile Food Pantry
We are excited to announce that we have extended our partnership with Gleaners through the school year!
They will continue to be set up in the FHS Klein Road parking lot from 9-11 a.m.on the following dates:
3/21, 4/4
This is a drive-up service that allows our families to remain in their vehicles and pick up a box of grocery-type items.
The Gleaners Mobile Food Pantry will continue bi-weekly pending no closures for inclement weather.

Outside Food and Beverage Policy
Outside food delivery is a safety concern. We do not want to have strangers and people that we do not know coming to our buildings with delivery bags. It also is a workload issue for office personnel. Managing multiple food deliveries during lunchtime becomes an additional responsibility for our office staff.
The District works hard to provide a variety of healthy, good-tasting food in its cafeterias, and students are always free to bring their own lunch to school. We will continue to follow our past practice of making sure students receive lunch if they forget to bring one from home.

To provide the most effective process for entering and exiting Richards Middle School, we need our families consistent help in observing the below traffic expectations:
- Our RMS bus loop is only to be used by emergency vehicles and our district’s school buses between the hours of 7:15 am through 4:00 pm.
- To help with our daily traffic flow, please follow our painted traffic arrows in our parking lot.
- In supporting our traffic flow for entering and exiting for all vehicles, please observe no standing, parking, waiting and stopping in the parking lot aisle ways.
- When exiting Richards Middle School at dismissal time, please utilize either our RMS Garfield exit, FHS Garfield exit or FHS Klein exit.
Please be aware of students, families and guests who are walking in our parking lots by obeying traffic laws, regulating your speed, and following the traffic direction arrows. Images can be found below. Please no parking or standing where you see a red x.
Our district security personnel will communicate these expectations to our families when needed. Thank you for your support with keeping RMS a safe travel area for everyone on campus.
PLEASE BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR ADDITIONAL SIGNS ALONG THE DROP OFF LANE TO HELP DIRECT TRAFFIC FLOW!
Attention students who utilize the crosswalk to walk over Garfield Road
This is a reminder to our students to ensure that you are using the appropriate area to cross the street to get to the other side of Garfield. Please see pictures below for reference of our crosswalk signs and striped area by the Richards Middle School Electronic Board. We want our students to make sure they are looking both ways and being aware of vehicles traveling on Garfield. Always wait to cross this crosswalk when the road is clear to do so.
We thank you for always being aware of your safety and traveling vehicles as you arrive and leave RMS at this crosswalk area.
