Volume 3, Issue 5 - September 13, 2019
We always try to share information with you that will help you understand your student activity when they are online and on Social Media. As parents, we want them to have the ability to communicate online, and sometimes we think that setting all social media to "private" allows them to be safe. A research team at BuzzFeed has found that privately posted Instagram and Facebook content, including Stories, can be shared by friends or followers — and Stories content seems to stay live well past its 24-hour expiration date. Using a basic understanding of HTML, the team discovered that one can easily access source URLs for the privately posted content and share those with people who do not follow — or are not friends with — the user. And Stories content, they found, stayed live at those links “for a couple days,” despite seeming to disappear from the actual Instagram app. Facebook is downplaying the workaround as akin to taking a screenshot, but the researchers found something a bit more troubling: “photos and videos are being stored and accessed on Facebook’s content delivery network after a person took an action to remove them from their profile.”
Instagram is one of the most popular apps with students between the ages of 8-18.
Why should parents care?
- Kids are addicted to Instagram.
- Kids work hard to get many likes, comments, and followers so they feel popular.
- Kids usually don’t think a lot before posting pictures.
- Their pictures are (usually) visible to all Instagram users.
- Their self esteem is tied to their latest Instagram post.
- Giphy is not moderated which means students will have more access to inappropriate content.
- Understanding the apps your students are using is the best way to ensure they stay safe on social media.
What can parents do?
- Follow your kids on Instagram and see what are they posting.
- Consider talking with your kids in real life about their posts, and not commenting on them online, so they feel they have some space.
- Use their posts to know what’s going on in their life (and talk to them about it in real life).
- Always report inappropriate content or hacked and hate accounts.
- Remind your kids to keep each post “Light, Bright and Polite.”

National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month
“September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month—a time to share resources and stories in an effort to shed light on this highly taboo and stigmatized topic. We use this month to reach out to those affected by suicide, raise awareness and connect individuals with suicidal ideation to treatment services. It is also important to ensure that individuals, friends and families have access to the resources they need to discuss suicide prevention.” Our community has several resources available to assist children and adults who are living with mental health concerns. The links shared here direct you to a list of local community resources as well as national suicide prevention resources for families. Please contact Gentry Outreach Counselor Erin Maynard with questions or concerns at emaynard@cpsk12.org

Advisory Lessons for September 16-20
During the week of September 16-20, Gentry students will explore how to interpret and retain the meaning of data through categorization, grouping and mnemonics.
Students will also begin to recognize that rules and systems literally govern all aspects of life. Structured rules and systems govern everything from home life and school, to being a part of a community and friendship group. They will practice working cooperatively with fellow students within the boundaries of a given set of rules.

Interstate Studios will return to Gentry on September 26 to retake photos for those students who would like to have their photos retaken. If your student is having their photo retaken, they will simply need to bring their original photo packet and uncut photos to this sitting.
