Wachter Party Railroad
History
- In 1864 president Abraham Lincoln signed the Northern Pacific Railroad land grant, the largest of the land grants in american history.
- In 1872, the Northern Pacific’s tracks crossed the Red River into where Fargo resides today and by the summer of 1873 the railroad extended to the Missouri River where Bismarck was established.
- During the 1870s, financial hardship hit the Northern Pacific Railroad and construction of the track all but ceased at the Missouri River until 1879 when it continued west from Bismarck.
- In 1883, the westward track met up with Northern Pacific construction from the east in Gold Creek, Montana and the final gold spike was driven into the track.
Inventors
- George Stephenson build the world's first public railways: the Stockton and Darlington railway in 1825 and the Liverpool-Manchester railway in 1830.
- Stephenson was the chief engineer for several of the railways.
- George Stephenson successfully applied the steam technology and created the world's first locomotive.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages
- It facilitate long distance travel and transport goods.

Disadvantages
- It involves much time and labor in booking and taking delivery of goods through railways as-compared to motor transport
- The railway requires a large investment of capital.
- The cost of construction, maintenance and overhead expenses are very high as compared to other modes of transport.
- The investments are specific and immobile. In case the traffic is not sufficient, the investments may mean wastage of huge resources.
How did it impact North Dakota
- It help bring in supplies and life to the fledgling state.
- If you didn't have a railroad in your town it meant a life of difficult travel and inconvenience.
- The railroad is primarily responsible for settling the Great plains and establishing the state.
Importance to setting the world
- They were liberating - increasing mobility and speed across the continent - as well as confining: they help power of economic life and death over many communities, often abusing power.
- The railroads played an important role in developing new concepts of management and brought forth giant corporations, but usually accompanied by obscure financial practices and greed.
- the provide employment for thousands and thousands of workers, but the conditions under which these laborers had to work and live made them revolt and informed the nation of the hardships of the working class.
