Child Abuse Parenting Tips & Articles
Preparing Your Child for the STAAR Test
Preparing for the STAAR test can be a collaborative effort between parents, students, and educators. Here are 7 strategies that you can adopt to support your child(ren) in for the upcoming test:
- Understand the Format and Content: Familiarizing yourself with the STAAR test format and content is the first step. You can find resources on the Texas Education Agency (TEA) website or use the link added below. This knowledge allows you to help your child focus their study efforts on the subjects and specific areas that will be tested.
- Establish a Study Schedule: Creating a structured study schedule can help manage your child's time effectively. Break down study sessions into manageable chunks, ensuring there's ample time for breaks and relaxation. Consistency is key, so try to keep study times regular and predictable. Encourage your child to tackle more challenging subjects when they're most alert.
- Utilize Available Resources: There are numerous resources available for STAAR test preparation, including online practice tests, study guides, and tutoring services. Your child's teacher can also provide materials or can recommend resources. Engage in these practice tests with your child to identify their strengths and areas for improvement. This not only boosts their confidence but also familiarizes them with the test format.
- Encourage Reading: Encouraging regular reading habits can significantly improve literacy skills, comprehension, and vocabulary, all of which are critical for success in the STAAR test. This could include reading books, magazines, and even educational websites. Discuss the reading materials with your child, asking questions about what they learned to enhance their comprehension and critical thinking skills.
- Promote Healthy Habits: A child's well-being is directly linked to their academic performance. Ensure your child gets enough sleep, eats nutritious food, and engages in physical activities. These healthy habits can improve concentration, memory, and overall test performance.
- Provide Emotional Support: Testing can be a stressful time for students. Provide emotional support and reassurance to help ease anxiety. Encourage them by highlighting their progress, no matter how small. Let them know that while doing well is important, it's okay to make mistakes and that you're proud of their effort.
- Communicate with Teachers: Regular communication with your child's teachers can provide valuable insights into your child's progress and areas that need attention. Teachers can offer specific advice tailored to your child's needs and may suggest additional resources or strategies.
By taking an active role in your child's STAAR test preparation, you can help them feel more prepared and confident. Remember, the goal is not just to pass a test but to foster a love of learning and a resilient attitude towards challenges.

This month we will focus on Safety & Test Taking Skills with the following guidance lessons:
PK: Personal Safety
Kinder: Personal Safety
1st: Personal Safety
2nd:Personal Safety
3rd: Test Taking Skills
4th:Test Taking Skills
5th:Test Taking Skills
6th:Test Taking Skills
SB 9 Opt In Letter-6th-12th Grade Students Only
Dear Parent or Guardian of 6-12 grade students,
As school counselors begin their lessons, we need your assistance with completing the "Opt In" form. Please click on the link and complete the information. More information about Senate Bill 9 is below:
Passed during the 87th (2nd) Legislative Session, Senate Bill 9 (SB 9), requires schools to educate students on the prevention of child abuse, family violence, dating violence, and sex trafficking. In other legislation, a suicide awareness component is also required as a part of each district’s comprehensive school counseling program. With guidance from the School Health Advisory Council (SHAC), Crandall ISD has determined the approved curriculum that will be used to teach these topics in Grades 6-12.
The lessons were created with developmentally appropriate language, with a focus on personal safety, and will be implemented through presentations by counseling personnel. The personal safety lessons are intended to help children understand personal boundaries and ways to stay safe and to tell a trusted adult if they experience a situation where personal safety is, or was, in question.
If you have any questions or if you wish to review curriculum materials in advance of instruction, we encourage you to do so by contacting your school counselor directly.
Senate Bill 9 also requires that Crandall ISD obtain written consent from the student’s parent/guardian before a student may be provided with instruction related to the prevention of child abuse, family violence, dating violence, and sex trafficking. Without written consent from a parent/guardian, students will not receive instruction related to child abuse, family violence, dating violence, sex trafficking, or suicide awareness.
