There are sessions to suit all ages and abilities. Some of our OpenZone @ The Word activities include robotics, making movies in the TV studio and computer programming to name but a few. All the sessions take place in OpenZone @ The Word, which is on the 2nd floor. Booking should be done through the What's On section on The Word website. Are you aged 8-18? Do you want to work in television?
Ever wondered what it's like to be a TV presenter, or work behind the camera in a TV studio?
How would you like to join our professional team and make fantastic television in a brand new TV studio in South Shields?
We are looking for a few young people who are creative, dedicated and would love to work in television. Those are three of the things you must bring to the table if you want take part in this amazing opportunity to learn the ins-and-outs of TV studio production.
2 hour workshop- Introduction to working in television
This is a very popular program, with very limited places, so please book early if you want to avoid disappointment.
Sessions take place on Monday 10th April and Tuesday 11th April

Maths in Motion
Welcome to The World of Cars Maths in Motion - an exciting, competitive and fun Challenge for everyone - no matter what your age!
Our software recreates the thrills and spills of high speed motor racing and our races feature drivers from all over the world. Choose your virtual Formula 1 driver and customize your car. Each driver gets to design and set up their own racing car using a mixture of basic maths skills and personal decision making.
The rules are easy... get your maths right, make the correct decisions and you will stand a chance of winning a race......... get your maths wrong and you run the risk of crashing your car, blowing up the engine or not even make it to the starting line! What could be simpler?

Child to be accompanied by a Parent/ Guardian.(They will work together as a team of 2 and run one car)
Children should be aged 10 or over to take part.

Hour of Code
The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide phenomenon.
Come along and spend an hour exploring how coding can control characters in a game. Develop your skills in computing and solve problems as you go!

Lego Robotics
Learn how to programme a Lego EV3 robot. If you enjoy a challenge and want to have fun this session is for you. Control your robot using an easy to use App on an iPad. Control the motors to make it move and programme the sensors to make it respond to its environment. Even make your robot dance.

Laser fun for children
Come and use our laser cutters to make your own key-rings or drinks coasters or badges. Have fun and be creative!
