Olympic Middle School
Weekly Message for April 8-April 12
Good afternoon Olympic families and staff
I hope that all students and staff had a wonderful Spring Break! I am glad the weather cooperated to give us many days of sun and a bit warmer weather. It was great to spend some time in the yard! Reading took a top priority for me as I was able to get two books read, one for work and one for pleasure! We will have opportunities this week for our students to return read books and select new ones!
As we return tomorrow, we will take the week to work with students to review our expectations, including the structures and routines followed in the classroom. These will be reviewed in all classes, with a focus in Homeroom on language, being respectful and being responsible Eagles! Students will meet in class meetings to discuss one topic each day with a focus on helping our students understand the “why” of having expectations. I have attached a document to the bottom of this newsletter with important information about the “why”. Through these lessons, students will work together to create a pledge/agreement chart for their homeroom doors. This will be up by next Monday; April 15th and we will post photos on Facebook!
You will also see attached to the bottom of this newsletter an important message for parents who pick their students up each day. We have had many phone calls to district and local agencies sharing community concerns about some unsafe situations occurring on K street. Please review the information attached. We are also asking parents who pick up their students to stagger these with 5th grade picking up 2:35-2:45 and then 6th grade 2:45-2:55. If you have a student in both grades, you may choose which time slot to use.
Intramurals: Track and Field starts tomorrow, Monday, April 8 with 114 students signed up!
- Practices will run from 2:45-4:30 M, T, Th, F
- Students will meet coaches in the weight room of OMS and must be there no later than 2:45.
- After attendance students will walk over to the High School.
- Please have a talk with your athletes about remaining safe, as we will be crossing streets and need to keep the group in a 2-person wide line.
- At roughly 3:10 practice will begin and run until the scheduled end time.
- Please make sure to have arrangements made to have your athlete picked up no later than 4:45.
- Track meet schedule and Information will be sent out later this month.
In closing, I want to ask again for your help with cell phones and backpacks. Please remind your students that cell phones must be off and in lockers or in phone lock up in Mr. Kraft’s office during the school day. Having phones away has allowed students to be more engaged in class discussions and their learning. It has also had a direct correlation to a decrease in social media issues at school around bullying, threatening and intimidation of peers. Most students are following this expectation, and we greatly appreciate that!
Let’s have a wonderful week at Olympic!
