Family Engagement Newsletter October 2022
Dear Families,
As many of you are aware, since February 2017 the Carver Elementary staff has been implementing the ABCs of ALICE. At this time, we wanted to provide you with information about what this means for our school.
We have several trained staff who will be presenting the ABCs of ALICE lessons to our Carver Elementary students in their classrooms on October 26, 2022. All our counselors and many of our teachers are experienced in teaching the ABCs of ALICE lessons and are available to answer any questions you may have. Here is some information to help you understand what the lessons include. What will the ALICE lesson look like in your child’s classroom?
For students in grades K-3, a modified version of the book, “I’m Not Scared, I’m Prepared” will be reviewed. We have made some minor modifications specifically to include the ABCs of ALICE. These modifications are customized for our school. The original version can be previewed athttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRTIpMft_u8
Students in grades 4 and 5 will receive a modified lesson where we will discuss aspects of the book, explain the CES protocols, and answer questions.
Some of our specialized classes such as our preschool, alternative programs, and Support for Progress & Independence classes will receive the lessons through a social story created by our support staff, special education teachers, and therapists.
What are the ABCs of ALICE?
Alert: We will get the word out using clear concise language & describe the location of the event.
Barricade and Lockdown: We will continue to lock down students in secure areas by using methods such as barricades. We will build a barricade during this lesson.
Communicate/Inform: Keeping the staff and students informed continually allows for good decision-making.
Distract: If necessary distract, confuse, and create distance.
Evacuate/Escape: If based on the Alert and Communication/Information the best option is to Evacuate/Escape, staff and students are empowered to get out of the building ensuring students' safety. While we will not practice evacuating during this lesson, we will discuss this option and the teachers will be walking the students to the evacuation area later on in October. This designated area is adjacent to the school.
At no point will we ask our students or staff to make any attempt to subdue an intruder outside of their secured area. However, we will provide them with options that, if faced with a life-or-death situation, can be applied to greatly enhance their safety. These options include escaping, barricading the door, and protecting oneself by any means necessary should an intruder enter the room.
How can you support the ALICE lesson? Remind your child that the most important thing to do is to listen to the directions of one’s teacher.
The ABCs of ALICE lessons will take place on October 26, 2022.
If you have any questions about student lessons at Carver Elementary, you may reach us at 508-866-6210 or Officer Wall at 508-866-2000.
Sincerely,
Ruby C. Maestas

MATH AT CES
Dear Families,
Miss Smith, a fourth-grade math teacher, has been talking with me about sharing her favorite podcast with families. What a wonderful idea! Please see her recent classroom post on how we can understand the “New Math!” I hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Remember, we are always here to support you and your child in their math journey.
~Jennifer Kelley, Math Instructional Coach
CES Families,
I am sharing 3 episodes of one of my favorite podcasts: Math is Figureoutable by Pam Harris.
I most likely learned math in much the same way you did. Wow! Things have sure changed with how math is taught. I have had to be REALLY open-minded along this journey. I will say though, I am far smarter (mathematically) now than I was 2 years ago when I first started using Bridges in Mathematics.
Math hasn’t changed. The way we present math has changed. This “new math” is phenomenal if you are willing to consider a different way of looking at math. Math is based on reasoning and understanding relationships NOT memorization and repetition. This shift was a tough one for me to embrace.
Here’s the first podcast. It’s 13 minutes long. Give a listen and let me know if you have any “Ohhhh” moments.
Sincerely, Miss Smith
Ep 55: For Parents: Why All the "New Math"?
This episode is for all the parents out there who are invested in helping their children! It can be frustrating to see how math class looks different than it did when we were students. Why is it different anyways? Why would math class have to change? We are so grateful you're taking the time to ask. We'll do our best to provide some answers.
Talking Points:
Why did the math we were taught in school look the way it did?
Why do generations of technology dependent students need a different way to learn math?
Why do students need to understand Real Math for our future?

ATTENDANCE AT CARVER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
A Friendly Reminder About Attendance
Please use your best judgment when keeping your child home from school. For example, if your child is running a fever or experiencing stomach issues, we would expect your child to stay home. Please do your best to schedule vacations around school days. We have a limited number of days to work with your child, and we want to make every day count! For additional information, please refer to page 21 of our 2022-2023 Student Handbook. Remember to email cesabsent@carver.org and your child's teacher when they are absent from school. We appreciate your support.
School Breakfast and Lunch is FREE for all students this year!
