Why are the 6 essential nutrients important?
The 6 essential nutrients are very important to our bodies without them our body wouldn't be able to function properly. It helps us stay healthy and have a better diet. They are carbohydrates, fats, protein, vitamins, minerals, and water.
Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are the main source of energy. They are two types of carbohydrates, complex, and simple. Complex carbohydrates are better to consume because they are broken down quickly by the body. You dont want to have many simple carbs because those are your sugars that take longer to break down. Some healthy food sources are Whole grain bread, oatmeal and, lentils.
Fats
Fats are a back up source of energy, they build cell membranes and carry out vitamins. There is also two types of fats: saturated, and monounsaturated. Saturated fats can raise your cholesterol, and increase your risk of heart disease so you want to avoid eating them. Some examples are fries, chips,hamburgers etc. Monounsaturated fats are better for you and your heart. Some examples are almonds (nuts), avocados, etc.
Proteins
Proteins are needed for growth, and repair of body tissue. They also regulate body functions. Some food examples of protein are beans, white meat, eggs, fish, and poultry
Vitamins
The body needs vitamins in order to work properly, they are generally found in fats, oils, and foods. They are two types: Water soluble which are vitamins B and C and Fat soluble which are vitamins A, D, E and K. Water soluble vitamins cannot be stored in the body. Fat soluble vitamins cannot be easily excreted, stored in the liver or fatty tissue. You can get vitamins from fruits (oranges, cantaloupes), vegetables (carrots, sweet potatoes), and milk.
Minerals
Minerals are important for building strong bones and for metabolic processes. They are important for your teeth, skin, blood, and hair. Some major minerals are calcium, phosphorus, sodium, magnesium, chloride, and potassium. You can find minerals from foods like cheese, yogurt, and tuna.
Water
Water maintains body temperature and transports nutrients and waste. It is the main component of many foods it also helps your kidneys. In average your body is made out of 60% of water. You need water in order to survive.
