Principal’s Message
Happy Holidays! Please take the next two weeks to relax and enjoy time with family. Thank you to all of our students who sent us Thankful Thursday messages of gratitude this week. Here is the link to the Red Oak Gratitude Wall. Remote learning resumes on Monday, January 4, 2021. Happy New Year!!!
Happy Retirement Mrs. Currea!
Mrs. Currea, our beloved paraprofessional, is retiring at the end of this month. We thank her for her many years of service at Sherwood and Red Oak. We created a Padlet to let her know how special she is to us. Feel free to add a message for her here: https://padlet.com/nbellini2/w98fc07gvp6z1qag
We will miss Mrs. Currea and wish her the best in her retirement!
Griffin Tales
Griffin Tales is made up of a group of performing art majors at Northwestern University. Every year they select a handful of schools to visit. The group selects 5-7 student story submissions from every school they attend. Inspired student authors then have the opportunity to see their story come to life!
When are submissions due by?
Griffin Tales is in high demand this year, and we are one of the first schools that they are visiting. Therefore, all submissions are due by Monday, January 11th . Stories must be submitted by parents using this form. We are happy to submit stories for you. Just send Mrs. Monge the final version and she'll take care of the rest:)
When will our students' stories be performed virtually?
Griffin Tales will be sending their videos with our kids performances throughout April and May, 2021.
Additional Helpful Information:
Students are welcome to submit individual or group stories.
Students can write in Spanish or in English, or a combination of both.
Students are welcome to submit as many stories as they like. Each story needs to have its own Story Identification Form attached.
Students are welcome to add illustrations or dictate their stories to an adult.
Submissions may be typed or handwritten.
Submissions are not returned.
Students may submit a piece they wrote inside and/or outside of school.
Closer to the performance, they will share the names of the students' submissions that were selected, which we will share with parents. We use the element of surprise so that students do not know that their story was selected until it is performed.
Please contact Mrs. Monge at rmonge@nssd112.org if you have any questions.
Rocky’s Virtual Pop Up Shop
As you may know, Red Oak is a PBIS school which means we use Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports. We use the acronym SOAR to teach students to be Safe, take Ownership, be Accepting, and be Respectful. We reward students who demonstrate these behaviors with rockets. Students can then redeem the rockets they have earned for experiences or prizes at Rocky’s Pop Up Shop, our school store.
We wanted to find a way to continue this practice within our virtual setting. We are excited to present to you our virtual acknowledgment system and Rocky’s Virtual Pop up Shop! Instead of giving out paper rockets, all staff are connected to ClassDojo, an online system to reward points. Staff can give “rockets” (dojo points) to students at any time for demonstrating the SOAR behaviors. Parents are encouraged to create an account at classdojo.com so that they can see how many rockets their student is earning. Parents will be sent a QR code from their classroom teacher to join the school’s account.
Students can redeem their virtual rockets by clicking on the links below:

Thank you for all you do to support your child(ren) in helping us teach them to SOAR!
