Principal's Message
Dear Angell Community,
We are excited to celebrate Angells Around the World this Thursday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. This is an opportunity to showcase the unique cultural backgrounds of our Angell families. This is a FREE event and we hope to see as many of you there as possible. We recognize this time year we are competing with many after school events so try your best to stop in any time between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm. The timing of this event is so fitting as we will also celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage and Jewish Heritage Month throughout the month of May. If you would like to learn more about either, check out the links below. Our PTA is still looking for volunteers. If you can help out, please use the link below.
This past week we hosted Jim Basketball Jones. I wanted to take the opportunity to share some of his simple but impactful thoughts he presented throughout his entertaining basketball skill show that are important for all of our students to hear and attempt to put into practice each and every day. I have also included some pictures from the event for your enjoyment.
- Life is a Piece of Cake: When things seem hard or impossible, think of it like it's a piece of cake. Break it down to the individual parts and work on one thing at time. Don't worry about the whole cake because that can be overwhelming. He used this approach to teach me how to floss.
- Effort is an addition (plus approach). Work hard and continue to add on to what you do well and before you know it your talents will show through.
- Be a patient listener.
- Talent is the result of effort. Perseverance reveals talent.
- You matter.
- Always look out for ways to help others.
- Stop talking about it and do something about it.
- Practice failing forward. Every failure leads to eventual success if we keep trying.
We are grateful to Jim for sharing his talents and his message with our students. He has published several books that would be good resources to add to your bookshelf or as a gift to inspire your student.
This past week we all of students danced off to their Family Circles. The lesson this month focused on inclusivity, teamwork and the ability to solve problems together. Please enjoy a few pictures below from a couple of our groups. We are proud that all of our Family Circles stepped up to the challenge and accomplished their goal.
As we move into May, this is a great opportunity to take a step back and reinforce the following concepts with your student as they approach each day . . .
- Be kinder than you have to be. Kindness spreads more kindness. Encourage your student to commit to random acts of kindness to make others feel joy, acceptance and respect. A little bit extra goes a long way. Kindness is a force multiplier.
- How we finish matters. Set daily, weekly and monthly goals with your student. Write them down and post them on the fridge and make it a daily ritual to reflect on success and failures and use this to set new goals.
- Quality and Effort go hand in hand. Impress the importance of always making a solid effort and taking responsibility even when things are hard or do not go as planned.
We look forward to making the most of the last two months of school and creating lasting memories. As always, thank you for your continued partnership in making each day at Angell one to remember.
