DinoMite Dinos in the News!
November & December at Rowland Norment Elementary School!
From the Principal's Desk:
We held our annual Holiday program on the evening of December 17, 2018 and we had a packed house! We enjoyed special musical presentations from Mr. Edward Brown and his band and Mr. Maurice (Reese) Rogers! However, our DinoMite Dinos stole the show with their performance of "A Winter Festival of Lights." Our children reminded us that we all have a light to shine, and that we must shine our light to the world!

The Pre-Kindergarten students have had a very busy November. They have enjoyed learning about the seasons changing. The students did a great job with our Veteran’s Day unit and our Thanksgiving unit. They loved learning about different jobs of the military. The students were amazed to hear the story of the first Thanksgiving. As a class, we talked about how thankful we are for all that we have. The students enjoyed Rowland Norment’s Native American Program. The picture is some of our students showing their Patriotic Spirit!

Happenings in Room #105 you may have wondered. Well let me tell you in the month of November we enjoyed learning about Native American traditions, we learned how hard the life was for the pilgrims once they made it to a new world. Most importantly we shared all the many things we are thankful for. We also modeled working together in such a way as did the pilgrims and Native Americans did. Team work makes the dream work is a motto we are learning.
December news for Room #105 is that we are learning the difference between words and letters, unscrambling words to make complete sentences as well as learning about ten frames, we had fun matching dominos to the correct number we were looking for in math. We enjoyed learning about Christmas traditions , we wrote our letters to Santa and enjoyed cookies and hot chocolate as we watch The Polar Express. Santa left us all a silver bell because we believed in him. We had fun making ornaments for our classroom tree. Each of us were on our best behavior because the elf flew into our room after Thanksgiving and he's been watching us so he could fly back to the North Pole to tell Santa if we had been naughty or nice. We wish you all a very MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

November has been a very busy month for Mrs. Strickland and Mrs. Harding’s kindergarten class. We are learning about the sounds our letterland characters make and how we can recognize these sounds in our sight words. We have continued to learn about writing sentences and how to touch the correct lines and correct letter formation. In math we are working on counting to 30 and writing our numbers 0-30. November is also exciting because we have discussed Thanksgiving and how it began and how we celebrate the holiday today.

The month of November has been very busy for 3rd Grade. In ELA we explored figurative language and how to correctly use it. Writing sentences with figurative language and illustrating them was a big help. In Math, we continued with Division/Multiplication. Remember to practice multiplication facts at home. Social Studies was a time for Thanksgiving and studying the first Thanksgiving. In Science, we learned about the layers of Earth and its landforms. Third graders went on a trip to the NC Aquarium and learned about life in the waters of NC. This hands on adventure was a wonderful time to learn outside of the classroom. Our third graders also worked very hard on NC Check-Ins for math. We are finishing up our study of kindness with the chapter book “Wonder”.
Ms. Whitted
In celebration of Native American Month, our class enjoyed reading the book The Rough Faced Girl by Rafe Martin. The students were able to make a text-to-text connection with the book, and the story of Cinderella with a Native American twist. One of our reading skills we have learned this month was Character Traits. As we read and talk about the story, the students chose a character from the book and wrote down their character trait on a post it note and put in on the poster.
Ms. Rogers
Our class went on our first fieldtrip to Fort Fisher Aquarium in Wilmington. The students enjoyed their educational and learning experience about the marine environment. They were able to listen to a presentation on the horseshoe crab and learn interesting facts about alligators, fish, jellyfish, etc. They were also given the opportunity to touch and feed the horseshoe crab. The make and take t-shirt craft was a hit with the students. Using various colors, each student designed their own shirt using patterns of fish, starfish, stingray, etc. After making their t-shirts, they worked with a partner on word searches, cross word puzzles, etc. about the marine environment. The excitement and smiles of the students were priceless!
