The month of May was a summer opener with Robby earning his Doctorate of Pharmacy Degree from UCSF -- a degree that saw him in school for over ten years.
We celebrated the news that Robby had obtained a coveted position at Scripps La Jolla as a Pharmacy Resident, and he would be moving to San Diego. This was great news because after four years of a long distance engagement this move would coincide with Robby and Alyssa's summer wedding.
On June 8th, Robby married Alyssa, his college sweetheart of nine years. This wedding gathering took on the atmosphere of a celebration of all Robby’s personal and professional achievements. Robby's summer peaked in July when he passed his state board exams, and simultaneously he began his long awaited career at Scripps.
Unfortunately, in August, four weeks into his residency and only seven weeks after being married, Robby was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. This tragic event began with a hemorrhaging nosebleed that landed Robby in the Emergency Room. After several nosebleed events Robby was referred to an ENT specialist who discovered a mass in Robby's sinuses. A CT scan led to a surgery three days later to remove a mass 5 centimeters in diameter. Despite good news post surgery that it appeared to be a benign tumor, within two days Robby received an early morning phone call with the results of the final biopsy and a cancer diagnosis: Olfactory Neuroblastoma.
While this diagnosis provided us with a name for his type of cancer, there was no comfort in discovering the facts surrounding his condition: he has a cancer that is in his brain. There are no protocols for treating this type of cancer that has only had roughly 1,000 reported cases since 1930. During the initial meeting with the head and neck surgeon, we discovered that Robby would need a brain surgery, and he would require an additional six weeks of radiation therapy to his head. To complicate matters, Robby was informed that all of his treatment would need to take place out of state at MD Anderson in Houston, Texas where there is a specialist for this type of rare cancer.
We are calling upon friends, family, colleagues and extended circles to help in funding several needs. Robby's first need is for travel and housing in Houston, Texas. His dream residency in San Diego has been put on hold, and as a result he has lost his income and will shortly lose his insurance. The money we raise will go directly toward purchasing Robby's COBRA insurance, paying additional medical expenses, funding travel and housing during surgery, radiation, and rehab, plus safeguarding for unexpected needs accrued during his six weeks of radiation in Texas.
Alyssa has taken a leave from her graduate studies and work in order to travel with and care for Robby. Robby has a long battle ahead of him, and he has proclaimed: "This couldn't happen to a stronger person: I'm a fighter!" This couldn't be truer; he is the most persistent person we know. Robby is very dear to all of us, and we plan to have him with us for a very long time! Please help Robby fight to beat the odds.
*Robby and Alyssa boarded a plane on Monday morning, August 19th to Houston, Texas to begin the first step of his journey.
