- Occupation: Obstetrician- A medical doctor who specializes in management of pregnancy, labor, and birth.
His Work
Ignaz's work handled women and childbirth. He was a Hungarian physician. He proved, in the 1840's, that hand washing reduced death in women whom had just given birth. He did this while he was the director of the maternity clinic at the Vienna General Hospital in Austria. He became known as "saviour of the mothers" after implementing rigorous hand washing rules in the maternity ward.
