Pleasant Valley Post
January 2018
It's hard to believe that we are approaching the halfway point in our school year! Day 90 is coming up, the end of our second marking period is this Friday and report cards will come on on the 25th of this month.
I anticipate an announcement this week (the week of 1/8) about what type of devices will be deployed in classrooms at all RCPS elementary schools. This is part of the final steps of our division Digital Conversion Plan. I will be learning the device choice right along with you all. It's an exciting time for our students and school and l look forward to leading us through it. Having the availability of additional technology to enhance instruction and further engage our students will be fantastic! However, I want to clarify that it doesn't mean that students will be on a device all day every day. The technology is a tool and will be used as such. Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions or concerns about the device choice or this learning initiative. I'm happy to discuss either with you at any time.
In other news, our Scholastic Book Fair begins this month! It opens for sales on January 25th and will be open through Parent Conference Night on February 1st! We hope you'll stop by and check it out while you're in the building with your student! All proceeds from this event go to our library! Mrs. Croy has been working hard to update our collection as it certainly needs it!
Thanks for a great first half of the school year together! Happy New Year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Hammill
Principal

A Note from Nurse Laurie:
Keeping in mind the amount of illness during this time of year, here are a few reminders to help decrease the spread of germs:
· Use tissues to cover the mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing.
· Dispose of the tissue immediately in a trash can.
· If you don’t have a tissue, cough/ sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands.
· Remember to wash your hands after coughing or sneezing.
· Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
· When hands are not visibly dirty, alcohol-based hand sanitizers that contain at least 60% alcohol may be used

RCPS INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY
When conditions require “short notice” changes in the school schedule, announcements will be made over local radio and TV stations. Messages will also be sent out to families via our school messaging system. Please be sure we have up to date phone numbers and email addresses for adults in your family whom you wish to receive these important messages.
We also encourage you to sign up to receive text or email notifications of closings and delays. You can do that here: http://www.rockingham.k12.va.us/subscribe-to-notifications.html . If you have already done so, you should not have to sign up again.
Parents and students should not call schools, school officials, or radio stations to find out if schools are being closed. Telephone lines must be kept open to enable schools and radio stations to receive notifications of school closings.
